| Well done. Elwing here is not taken by surprise or unaware of what will happen to her - she confronts her attackers boldly, and made what provisions she could. Her words cut through the seeming fairness of Maglor and Maedhros' demand. | |

| How hard it must have been for Elwing to send her children away with only the slimmest hope that she would ever see them again. She seemed to know what her fate would be. You did a lovely job of capturing the emotions of the scene. Elwing was sad, frightened and still, bravely did what she had to do to protect her children and the silmaril. I could feel her despair. | Poor Elwing. What a hard choice. I've never understood why she clung to that jewel so hard. What did she thing would happen if she gave it up? What did she think she gained by keeping it? Author Reply: Maybe it was down to the Doom of the Noldor. Beren and Luthien almost died to retrieve the jewel - Finrod and his companions did. The sons of Fëanor didn't dare take it from Luthien, and her son made the decision to fight for his kingdom and the Silmaril. By the time of the attack on the Havens, Elwing probably felt that she couldn't just hand over the jewel her family died to protect. It was also a symbol of all that was good and pure (and probably a symbol of Beren and Luthien's love). So I suppose she felt that she couldn't hand it over to a pair of Kinslayers (times three). Okay, actually I don't have a clue. But the curse is definitely at work there, because those nice, shiny jewels have left a pretty big trail of destruction in their wake. :-) Thank you for reviewing! | |
