Elrond and Celebrían let them explore Bree alone? Hm ... I wonder if this is brave or foolish ... Anyway, it is a promising start. Loved how the twins helped eagerly with everything they would have seen as horrible at home, and how they went fishing with their mother and discovered her abilities in fishing and swearing! Author Reply: As you'll see from tonight's chapter, it may not have been a good idea. I think the skills the twins are learning on this journey will be very useful to them in later life - but of course it's not work, and they're not learning anything!

Hi Jay! This is going to be short and possibly incoherent. Sorry. I'll write a better review for the next chapter. :-) I'm glad to see you with a new E2 story. :) And you have a lot in this chapter too. I loved seeing them learn the wilderness tricks--all of them but especially Celebrian's lessons. It's fun to learn new things about your mother...I mean from your mother. :) But them running around Bree...can't be good. This one looks like a lot of fun! Author Reply: I'm glad to be starting a new story, too. I love posting the first chapter! I hope the camping and wilderness stuff sounds authentic, as it's entirely made up! I like to show Celebrían in a less - ladylike - role. She did and said things here she'd never have done at home!

This is a good start... but what mischief do you have planned for them? I liked your water protocol. Vi Author Reply: Mischief? What makes you think I have anything planned for the twins?? I tried to think of the practicalities and realities of this sort of trip. I'm not a camping expert, but it seemed logical!

Oh, my, that was very brave of Elrond and Celebrian! I would have a guard trailing surreptitiously afterh them, I think! And chores aren't really chores when they are new like this :D Author Reply: Brave? Foolish, more like. And you think E2 wouldn't notice a guard following them? When you're having fun, chores ... aren't. Thanks for the review, Nilmandra!

Ah, 'teenage' elves! I love seeing them throw themselves into all the activities that at home would not only be work, but disgusting, dreadful, punishment work. It just goes to prove that you can get kids to do almost anything if it's presented as a treat. And of course they're not having lessons! Loved watching Celebrian tickle trout. I'll bet Celeborn taught her to do that - when they sneaked off for a few hours of quality adar/daughter time. And interesting role reversal having her be the one to cuss so fluently. I can imagine the shock on Elrond's face when he first heard his beautiful wife prove that you learn a lot from your friends and family! He was probably nearly as shocked at the twins. And I'm sure they'll learn a lot more - like how to create havoc in Bree, perhaps. It is very . . . BRAVE of Elrond and Celebrian to let their little cherubs go off and explore. Author Reply: Yes, E2 are teenage. Adolescent. With all the problems that that entails. They mean well, but things just happen! They still don't see the camp chores as work though - or learning. I loved writing the scene with Celebrían - I like to show her as a fun loving mother to the twins and Arwen. I think the Lorien guards probably taught her trout tickling - but I can see Celeborn doing it too. I'm convinced that it was Galadriel who taught her to swear, though. I'm not quite sure what possessed Elrond to agree to let them explore ... he'll regret it. Thanks for the review!

If Elrond had some sort of time-Palantir and could see the amount of trouble and danger that his twins will get into in Lasgalen a few years from now, even though they will be mostly in the company of Lasgalen elves, he would never, never let them out of his sight on this journey (not even to make use of the river for purpose #4). Let's see -- there was the Elladan-falling-out-of-the-tree incident, and the Elrohir-in-the-Enchanted-River incident, the lost-in-the-snowstorm incident, and probably some others that I can't remember. But I guess that at this point, Elrond is still innocent about such things, since the twins haven't really been out of Imladris yet. I loved the scene where Celebrian swears. It was so similar to something from my own childhood. I remember my shock as a child when I heard my very dignified grandmother utter a very rude word after she burned her finger while cooking. Kids just don't expect grownup ladies to do that sort of thing. I didn't even think that my grandmother knew that word! I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next, although I'm a bit nervous about it, too. With Elladan and Elrohir, anything is possible. Author Reply: grin Elrond was right with his initial reaction, wasn't he? Never let the twins explore a strange town on their own! As well as the scenes you mention (and I love it when someone remembers my stories so well!) there is the baby troll incident, and the Bruinen river incident, which both happened at Imladris itself. I remember the first time I heard my mother swear (I was adult by then!) I was nearly as shocked as E2 were.

What's so wonderfully ironic about this is that all of the various and sundry other inhabitants of Bree probably won't realize that they are dealing with two adolescent Elves away from home for the first time and just get the impression that the Elves of Rivendell are just very immature and flighty and probably given to singing songs with the words "tra la la lally" in the chorus. Elladan and Elrohir are just like two puppies, bouncing around on their first trip ever. I love how they're suddenly eager to do chores. And I love even more that it's Celebrían who has the talent for snagging fish (at least, that's what they call it in Chicago, and I've never heard people from anywhere else attach a name to the skill). And for swearing, as well. People think that mothers don't swear, but they're wrong. It almost seems a little unfair that she can't pee in the river as well. The boys get to have nice running water, but Mom probably has to go squat in the woods. Oh well. At least the boys aren't watering trees. Author Reply: Hopefully the inhabitants of Bree won't have read The Hobbit - the elves there do seem flighty. E&E are rather earnest and excited here, but they mean well. The trouble that follows isn't their fault! I think Celebrian gets a raw deal in Tolkien - I always saw her as a victim in LOTR. I think that as wife to Elrond, and mother to the twins and Arwen she'd have a lot more spark than that. That includes tickling trout and teaching her sons inappropriate expressions!

I'm so happy to see another twins story from you, Jay! They really are good kids, and it's amusing to see how they don't even realize they're doing chores when they're on a trip. I liked all the camping stuff. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I've never camped. Author Reply: I just hope the camping stuff sounds authentic - I've never camped, either! I think ordinary tasks would be more fun, though. The twins are good kids, but to let them go off exploring?? Elrond was right the first time. They mean well, but things tend to happen ... That’s odd – I was only thinking about you earlier! Yay, a new story! I’m afraid I’m going to have to leave a very quick review because it’s late… I’ll make up for it later! Your summary has to be the most intriguing I’ve read in a long time! What’s all this about Elrohir??! Anyway, great start to the story. It’s actually good to see the whole family away from either Imladris or Mirkwood. Eilenach’s explanation about what they use the stream for and where exactly they do it was very interesting to me! LOL, the things I learn through fanfiction! I had to laugh too at how eager Elladan and Elrohir are to perform all the tasks and not realise that it’s still work – the tasks seem to be very much part of the adventure for them! I loved the fish-catching scene! It’s always good for parents to startle their children, I suppose! I wonder who taught Celebrían to catch fish like that, though? I’m still laughing at the image of her accidentally cursing and horrifying her sons. Hmm. Maybe a better question would be who taught Celebrían to curse like that??! Your descriptions of the landscape are wonderful. Very vivid, but then you always write descriptions marvellously. The details of the inn were a joy to read too. And I love Brindley! He’s so down-to-earth and not at all fazed by the appearance of all these elves. So Elladan and Elrohir are off to explore? That sounds full of possibilities! I’m very much looking forward to more of this. Again, sorry this is rushed - I hope it makes sense! :-) Author Reply: Thanks, Dot! I'm glad the summary sounds intriguing - I hope it will draw people in. I'm revealing nothing yet, though. It's fun to have a new setting for a change, and to have the entire family on holiday like this. The twins are seeing a side to their mother they never knew existed. Who taught her to fish? One of the Lórien guards, probably. Who taught her to swear? Galadriel, of course! I think Brindley has a lot in common with his distant descendant - though hopefully he's not so forgetful. But whose idea was it to let the twins go off exploring??
