Punctuation  by TopazTook 6 Review(s)

"Commas’ can’t hurt you, and I won’t ever, ever let them!"

*Giggles*
*Hugs Merry*
*Hugs poor, wee little Pippin*

Though, I have to point out that a lesson on punctuation shouldn't be incorrectly punctuated-there should be no apostrophe at the end of "Commas"-it's not possessive...

Author Reply: Thanks for the giggles and the hugs, from me and from Merry and PIp. :)

That is not an apostrophe on the end of "commas." It is a single quotation mark, denoting that the word is being referred to as a word, and is enclosed within single quotes because it comes inside Merry's dialogue that is in double quotes. Trust me, I get ticked off enough with people screwing up "it's" versus "its" that I would be on the watch for that. :)

Merry deserves the silver penny. Anyone who can succeed in training the young in the correct use of the apostrophe merits reward!

Author Reply: Glad you feel that Merry deserves his compensation here.:) (It's when people put the apostrophe in "it's" in its possessive form that gives me the creepy-crawlies. Shudder.)

“Oy, Merry,” Pippin protested and rolled out of his cousin’s lap to lie on his side on the bed. “You sound just like lessons!”

Wonderful story! I can imagine Merry as a teacher and he obviously had more success than Pippin's.

P.S.: There's not much punctuation in my last sentence, but I wonder if it's the right preposition. Well, Merry would now :)

Author Reply: Well, I think Merry may be rethinking that career choice about now, LOL.

(P.S.: "Than Pippin's" is the correct prepositional phrase in your last sentence. As for punctuation, you could put a comma before the "and" because they are two independent clauses joined by a conjunction, but you don't have to if you think they are short and closely related enough. Ain't English fun? I learned how to diagram sentences, too...but I won't, LOL.)

Good Merry-and-Pip fun!

Have you read Lynne Truss's "Eats Shoots and Leaves"? It's a hilarious British book for punctuation fans. [The title phrase shows the importance of punctuation: a panda who "eats, shoots and leaves" is a very different panda indeed from one who merely "eats shoots and leaves."]

Author Reply: I haven't read "Eats Shoots and Leaves" but I have actually heard the whole panda thing [mumbles] 20 years ago. I have read "Woe Is I" and skimmed "The Transitive Vampire," etc.

Glad you enjoyed the story.
