And so Frodo had met the one his Uncle Bilbo had respected most among his former companions, and heard how he was now missing, and in time came to appreciate what had become of him. Reason to grieve. Author Reply: Yes, indeed! I think Frodo not only respected Balin because of Bilbo's influence, but because he had had the opportunity to meet the Dwarf in person. I think you are right that Frodo was even more touched by Balin's fate than he might have been otherwise. Thanks for your review! - Barbara

Tolkien really does a nice job of using allusions to his previous characters to add depth to whatever story he was telling. You do it here too. Author Reply: Thank you, Daw! I was worried that some people haven't read The Hobbit, so might not catch the back-story, but I think it worked out okay anyway.

Another nice expansion of canon. The flow from your work into Tolkien's was so seamless, I had to look twice. I'm really impressed with how well you've done this. Very good look at Frodo. Karen Author Reply: Thank you, Karen! I was worried that the quote came from a time after the back-story (the first few lines of the drabble) and before the last line, but I think it worked out okay. (However, I did add an extra blank line between the drabble and the quote to all my drabbles to separate them better...)

Ok, maybe at work is not the best place to read these. This one actually has me crying. I can't write drabbles. Most of my single sentences have 100 words in them! :) It always amazes me how one well placed word (or line--the last one) that is well set up, can just make an impact like a truck. Great job. These are great. Author Reply: Wow! "An impact like a truck"! *blush* Thank you so much! I always thought that it was sad that such a fine character ended like that, but it heartens me that the drabble gave you such an emotional response. Thank you, Elliska!
