Dreamflower's Mathoms I  by Dreamflower 4 Review(s)
Queen GaladrielReviewed Chapter: 44 on 4/24/2006
A beautiful, peaceful little scene. It was really very thoughtful of Frodo to give them that house; it's just perfect for both of them: private, cosy, not too far from Merry's family in case of an emergency... I love homecoming scenes! :)
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: They really did need a place of their own at that point in time, and Frodo was wise enough to realize that.

I enjoy homecoming scenes a lot myself!

Oh, what a dear, sweet drabble!

"“We will have to refurnish. All of this goes back to Bag End when it’s restored. But Mum has said we may have the pick of the mathom rooms at the Hall."

Ah, but the bathtubs stay! lol! And can they get that real estate game about buying up the Shire from down in the mathom rooms, too? Oh, but you know what, that's exactly what Lotho was doing! Don't know that they'd be too interested in playing that game again after all.

Now, as for the substance of this drabble...

"“We’re home, Pip. Our house.”

“Yours, Merry.”

They stepped into the hall, and Merry lit the candle by the door.

“Ours, Pippin. Frodo put it in both our names.”

Pippin turned to Merry, startled. “But--”

“He worked it out with your father. It’s not a problem.” Merry lifted the candle to look about. ...

Now Frodo had gifted this house to them; they could live here on their own, not worry about curious and concerned relations barging in to their rooms every time one of them had a nightmare.

He turned to look at his cousin, unusually quiet for him. Pippin stood with glistening eyes.

“Pip?”

“Our house, Merry,” he smiled."

Wow, Pippin must have been filled with so much emotion, his mind whirling with so many thoughts about this ... it's amazing he was just teary eyed and not crying his eyes out. A mere tweenager, owning part of a house and living away from his parents, Frodo giving them the house, living with Merry, the Quest being well and truly over, ... it must have been quite overwhelming for him.

And once again, you have shown that beautifully in a short little drabble.

Author Reply: Oh, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they kept the extra bathtubs! LOL! And, like you, I'm not so certain they'd care to play "Rule the Shire" anymore, even if it is only a board game.

Of significance is something that I have mentioned from time to time that you will recall: in my Shire, all property of a minor belongs to the parent unless special arrangements are made otherwise. So yes, this would be quite overwhelming to Pippin, to realize to the extent that he has regained his father's trust, and to realize the extent of Frodo's generosity.

*blink, sniff*

The moment must have been so terribly hard for them. Realizing that they really *must* try and continue their lives again, and continue without their beloved Frodo but in memory. Wonderfully delineated.
