I forgot I hadn't caught up on these! *grins* Clever Pippin! Author Reply: He *is* a clever little thing, isn't he?

Out of the mouths of babes - the simple truths that only the young and innocent can come up with. Pippin has it right. He may be the youngest, but his thinking was the most complex and profound in this instance. Another instance of things being a matter of perspective for Merry and Sam, who thought in terms of geographic distance based upon where they themselves have been. While I wonder what Frodo's answer would be, I'd wager it would be more along the lines of Pippin's answer. He knows how far Bilbo has gone, but more important, he knows how far away his parents have gone and that he cannot reach them. Author Reply: Yes, really it is all a matter of perspective. Sam and Merry are the practical ones, seeing only the literal meaning of "far away" as being one of physical difference, while Pippin (and Frodo as well I suspect) are able to see the imagine the more subtle meanings.

Well, Frodo is as always diplomatic and polite. But I would really like to know what HIS definition of "far away" is. Pippin's answer was very wise and it's always correct ;-) Author Reply: Frodo is old enough to know that "far away" is relative; if someone you miss is gone somewhere--it's far away, even though it might be somewhat close in actuality. And if you are well traveled, far away is going to be further off than someone who is a stay at home. For Bilbo, "far away" would be anywhere further off than the Lonely Mountain, while for the Gaffer "far away" could be Tuckborough or Whitfurrows.

*snickers* Pippin is right, I think. 'Far away' is everywhere where *he* is not ;-) Author Reply: *sigh* I think you are right. Which makes Middle-earth *ever* so far away from here!

“I think it’s wherever we *aren’t*!” That is sooo true! Pippin is very smart : ) Author Reply: That's the kind of wisdom a child will come up with, when they are given a moment to think! I thought perhaps Frodo would encourage him to find his own answer...
