| Oof, why do I read these? the feelings they generate, just terrible! Though sometimes there are nice things like a description of Éowyn, or someone's bravery or something...but wow, Wormtongue is bad! And Éomer called him worm already! --though fairly warranted. Actually, he is most certainly Wormtongued already. That is what is so bad about it. If only Théodred would understand! I thought he and Éomer were on the same side! I guess that comes later when Théoden starts actively declining. hohum, I guess Éomer is used to punishment! I guess that is good, even if this was unjust. On the other hand, Théodred is actually pretty right. Gosh, not only did Grima try to break Théoden, he apparently broke Théodred. I guess Théodred is younger and more often away, so he recovers sooner and realizes what is going on. "Éomer knew with sudden finality that the days of protection from above were over. From now on, the two of them would have to look out for themselves." Or that explains it. He is right though. After all, he is 19 or 20. Unless he counts Elfhelm or Hama or someone, but he probably doesn't. Well, until Aragorn and Imrahil, heh, but even then, he is king of Rohan. "I promise herewith that no such thing will ever happen again, and I seek to make amends and hope that you accept my sincere apologies." And that is at least two or three lies. and Grima and Théodred probably know it. "A stroke of luck had seen to it that his cousin had missed the true nature of their exchange: a confirmation of the continuation of their feud with other means." Oh, I guess Théodred doesn't know it? But Théoden saw something, and he might have seen more... Author Reply: Hi Fimbrethel, I have to apologize, it has been a while since I last visited Stories of Arda, and I don`t get email notifications anymore, so I am only seeing you reviews now. That doesn*t mean that I`m not enjoying them, though. ;-) Thank you very much for taking the time. It has been so long since I wrote this particular story, I suppose I need to read it again. But yes, I absolutely understand that these would leave you frustrated. I`m not sure I would write it again like this today (with Théodred not really being sympathetic). I found a different way of writing him in the meantime, one that would not not really fit with this incident. I guess I just wanted an Éomer against the world scenario... Anyway, thank you once again and best wishes, Kat | |

| A very good (though very frustrating) chapter. You portray people and their emotions very well, and I'm glad to find a writer who likes Eomer as much as I do, and who understands him very well! This piece totally explains the way Eomer acts toward Grima in LotR - he clearly hates him and is aware of his intentions toward Eowyn, but acts as though he can't challenge him or confront him directly. Of course, he always saw through Grima, but Grima came to power and influence when Eomer still had none, and could do nothing to stop him. And at the time of LotR Grima is too well-entrenched with the King, and Eomer's hatred probably too well known for his opinion to have any influence with Theoden. Well-crafted. It is interesting the way you portray Theodred. It seems in the end that his death was a good thing for Rohan, b/c otherwise he would have fallen under Grima's sway too, and no one would have been able to lead the fight against the Enemy except for those banished. Unsettling. | |
