The Ties of Family  by Larner 6 Review(s)

Oo, I'm very anxious to see what this monument is going to be like! Hopefully better than it looked like being the first time they tried. LOL! It's too bad Fosco and Forsythia couldn't come...and I'm wondering if I should be worried about them and Emro. Narcissa would have made Frodo a wonderful wife, and it really is a pity they couldn't have married. What a wonderful husband and father Frodo would have been, and how lucky the lass to have him. :-) Oh, and I must tell you, this brings back a favourite memory:

“At least he has an excuse for not noticing their moon eyes, though,” Ferdi said, smiling.

*laughs* Oh yes, that has to be one of my very favourites...though when I'm in hearing of a remark like that it usually leads to good-natured teasing and a lot of silly (and occasionally witty!) nonsense. Can't wait to read more ASAP! God bless,
Galadriel

P.S. Love Ririon too! Again, he reminds me of another friend of mine. And he's very like Fosco, too. I look forward to knowing more of him, and of Ruvimir. Please forgive any misspelling-I'm afraid I don't often take the time to do the character-by-character thing with the screen reader when I'm really interested.

Author Reply: The full description of the monument, of course, is in "The King's Commission," so to fully appreciate it you will have to read the chapter Unveiling, although it's also described more briefly in the last chapter of Ruvemir in the Shire.

Glad you like the comment, as ironic as it was. Once he had the Ring Frodo had to learn not to notice lasses, or had his noticing shut down by the Ring itself; and it must have been extraordinarily for those lasses who were attracted to him.

And am glad you like Ririon. His vision was based on the descriptions given by a friend of mine while we were in college--I was a reader for most of the blind students who attended WWSC while I was an undergraduate. Fosco's is based on that told by a friend whom I met in grad school at WMU.

I hope you don't mind that I quote parts of your chapters back to you, Larner, but you truly have a wonderful way of describing things. I loved these passages especially...

He did not greet them formally, but with the joy of family, kneeling in the midst of them, exchanging children, hugging and being hugged. The sight of the tall Man kneeling on the ground outside the great Gates to the city, one arm around Sam and with Sam’s arm around his chest in return, Frodo-Lad on his other arm, would remain in her memory as the defining moment of knowing the nature of their King.

What must it be like for the King, to look into eyes which had seen those of his father, and grandfather, and who knew how many generations before him, and yet looked now into his own with the love of wife for husband?

Once he becomes aware of a need, our Lord King seeks ever to see it fulfilled.

Author Reply: Apparently you've always found certain passages fulfilling, and it's an honor to have you appreciate them. Thanks for making the writing worthwhile.

I just finished reading "The King's Commission" last night, so this chapter was a lovely companion piece to read this morning. ;) I liked the discussion of the Husbandmen's Dance especially. I don't believe I mentioned it in the original chapter it appeared, but the picture of Isumbard, Folco, and Reginard leaving a space open between them while dancing the Husbandmen's Dance as a memorial to Frodo was very touching.

Author Reply: I think that they would have wished all to remember him; and that you also see it as touching is a pleasure. The Shire is quietly waking to the knowledge that Frodo was important to them, I think.

Wonderful Larner - thank you. Yes, family comes first before rank, job or duty in both times of joy and sorrow.

Author Reply: I agree. It's always been this picture of Aragorn treating the Hobbits as friends and family that has beenn with me, that has added to the love I've held for him for the past forty-plus years.

This is such a sweet chapter. I am very much enjoying seeing all this through Narcissa's eyes. I love how you do that--take the same events and make them fresh with a new POV, adding more depth as you go. Very well done!

Author Reply: I'm glad this technique is appreciated. I love to look at things in depth, obviously, and am glad so many find it enjoyable and not boring.

I haven't reviewed yet, but I am loving this story as much as all of your others. You have done another excellent job of capturing the personality of someone that is hinted at in your other stories. I really have compassion for Nacissa and the anguish she must have felt most of her life. Though I'm hoping she might be finding something special in Brendilac. Interesting twist with Fosco and Forsethyia. I really like them and how special to think that they are there and to have someone for Narcissa to dote on and care for. But one of the things I really enjoy about your stories is how they all intertwine and weave together, though I would think that at some point you will run out of ways to tell it! :) Anyway, nice job! Oh, I am also amazed at how fast you can update, especially as I know you are a teacher.

Author Reply: I work a total of six hours a week with my blind students, which leaves me too much time. Then I work mostly nights and weekends with my DD adults, and do a lot of the writing when I'm on night watch. So, I have plenty of time to write--perhaps too much time.

I write way ahead before I start posting, so can post a chapter a day. Am almost at the end of this story, actually.

And I'm glad you find the interweaving of the stories interesting. Often when I put a character in one story I find I wish to find out what happened to that one, and write that one into another so we can see who she or he is, and how this one fits into the whole tale.

I think the next one will take place previously to these, though, although it, too, will have a tie to some of my former tales.
