When Winter Fell  by Lindelea 6 Review(s)

For breakfast I had four rashers of bacon, half a dozen eggs, fried to show their suns shining, cold pork pie and two apple dumplings, though Fanny said I had three.

Lin, that's priceless. That sullen teen made me giggle the whole chapter through. And Isumbras is Isengar, yes? Sorry, it's terribly early over here. *grins*

Author Reply: Yes, Isumbras is Isengar. My mistake! For some reason I got the name wrong halfway through the first chapter and it stayed wrong for the rest of the way. I corrected some, but evidently didn't get them all. Hopefully that's taken care of now.

Thanks!

Love the connections between Fortinbras’ journal and Bilbo’s experiences…down to the parallel dates, the sweltering weather, and the ominous harvest activities. Wonder how many young hobbits have been admonished against writing menus by their Grandfas over the years? And how many budding writers cultivated by journal exercises? Fortinbras is definitely improving…and hooked!

Author Reply: LOL! It reminds me of the exercises I read sometimes at homeschool fairs:

A Description of My Bedroom

(Sort of a variation on "What I Did on My Summer Vacation")

Menu-writing seems as if it would come naturally to young hobbits. (I'm sure they'd appreciate the song "Food, Glorious Food!" from "Oliver!")

Thanks!

It sounds much like my idea of what Frodo's first journal entries for Master Tumnus were like! Ah, great minds think alike.

Author Reply: O goodness, if I read them I don't remember! What story is that to be found in?

Now *why* do these journal entries remind me of *another* Took? *giggle*

Author Reply: Chuckling along with you!

Thanks.

I don't know, Grandfa! How to turn your Fortinbras against journal-writing: make him write out corrected spellings therein.

The sort of journal entries that are very amusing to read in later years, though.

I have a feeling Grandfa is going to win this battle of wills. He's been in training for longer.

Author Reply: Yes, have based these journal entries loosely on an actual journal I read once.

Have you ever seen that coffee cup that says "Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill"?

It seems that young Fortinbras and his Grandfa are well-matched opponents in this battle of wills: funny, stubborn and intelligent. I love how these first journal entries convey so much about them both, and I like them already!

Author Reply: O good, I was hoping that their similarities and the affection/exasperation between them would be evident.
