I just wanted to let you know that this is one of the most captivating, heart-warming stories I have, by
far, ever read. It made me cry. A feat that is almost impossible to accomplish because I am not a very emotional person to begin with. And to make me lose my self-control speaks mountains of the time and emotion put into this work. It certainly paid off. It truly is a beautiful story. And I applaud your talent for writing. It is a God-given gift that I know everyone, including myself, who have ever read it have been blessed by it. I hope you continue to write. Without it, your readers would feel that loss deeply indeed. I know I would. Thank you, my friend, for sharing your gift.

Thank you so much for your words of appreciation! I did indeed put a lot of time and effort and LOVE into the story. I'm glad to have shared it with you. :-)

Thank you Legolass for a beautifully written tale of friendship between Elf, Man and Dwarf. I particularly liked the way you tied up so many details, not given in book or movie, but plausible nevertheless. I enjoyed your story very much.

Thank you, Semmley, for your kind review. It's been some time since I heard from anyone at the SoA site. It's wonderful receiving a review for a story that has long concluded on paper (or on screen) but not in my heart. :-)

I just read this story this evening over many hours, and I can't adequately tell you how much I enjoyed it. The last few chapters made me cry. The immortality of the elves has, to me, always been such a sad thing, and the ending/epilogue broke my heart, though in a good way. The steadfast friendship of Legolas and Aragorn has always been something I love to read about. You portray it beautifully. You have a way with words. Thank you very much for sharing this tale.

Their friendship and parting are beautiful and bittersweet, and I'm glad that you the story evokes both those emotions in you, Aria. Thank you for your reading and for your kind review.

Some mistakes in that reply, Aria - blame it on my sleepiness, lol! Let me try again:

I just finished this incredible tale, although it was a bit hard to do with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. There are no words I can think of which would describe how I feel. I am totally in awe and plan to read your other four stories. Do you have any other stories posted on other sites?

You are one of the most gifted authors I have ever read.

Tari
P.S. I will read Tinnual's story. Thank you so much.

Author Reply:

Tari - thank you for the compliment, and for enjoying this tale as much as I enjoyed writing it. I hope to read your responses again when you read the other stories. You will find all of them here or at fanfiction.net: this and In Shadow Realm are long ones, Once Upon a Strongbow is much, much shorter; and two others are REALLY short. :-)

I wish I had time to write more, but -- it takes a lot of time and energy and passion to write the longer ones, so I guess I have to be happy with what I've managed to create so far. Thank you for your reviews - readers like you make the efoort worthwhile.

I came across this story on the MEFAs, and I want you to know I've spent all the day reading it from start to finish. That's not necessarily true of every story I start. This was an excellent story--it kept me hitting the "next" button, even when I had some other things I needed to be doing.

I rarely read stories without hobbits, but I'm using the MEFAs to expand my horizons a bit, and I am impressed with this tale. (My ambition is to R&R every story.) I was even more impressed as I gathered from various review/replies that this was your *first* fic!

Not only was this well constructed, with a very good plot and some very well depicted OCs--especially your villian, but you managed to stay true to canon as well. The dialogue also was very true to the style of the books: high and dignified. I did occasionally find it a bit angstier than my usual taste, but not enough so to turn me off.

I'd like to say one thing: I noticed that one reviewer criticized you for using multiple POVs. I have to disagree with that assessment: POV, like person or tense, is a stylistic choice, not a flaw. JRRT himself used multiple POVs, for goodness' sake. So do I. So do a good many excellent writers. As long as the author doesn't change in the middle of a paragraph I don't see the problem.

Anyway, just thought I'd say.

Hello, Dreamflower,

Thank you so much for this complimentary and encouraging review. Yes, this was my first fic (my first LOTR fic, and the first I 'published' anywhere). Because I love Tolkien's works so much, and because "For the Love..." was my first fic, it was special to me and I worked passionately on it, and I'm always touched whenever a reader writes in to tell me it reached them in some way.

I'm amused that you came across this at the MEFA site, for it has received all of one precious review there, hahaha! But what has meant most are the messages from individual readers, such as one who is translating in into German to read to her children, and another who is reading it chapter by chapter to a friend undergoing treatment for cancer - and this from you, who're making the effort to write to me a year after the story has ended. These, to me, are the true 'votes' that I cherish.

Yes, I do try to stick to canon because it's both challenging and fulfilling to spin new tales around a work we already honor and love, and because I respect Tolkien's characters. If you have time and the inclination, I invite you to read other stories I have written, and am writing, since this first one, which I try to base on canon, and in which Hamille has become well-known among the regular readers - it pleases me no end, I must say. :-)

Finally, re the criticism about using multiple POVs, THANK YOU for your support. The reviewer is a wonderful writer, so I respect her comment, but I do think (and I said so in my response) the use of multiple POVs is sometimes necessary to achieve a certain effect, so it needs to be refined not abandoned. I'm so glad you agree.

In appreciation,
Legolass

I am new to the site and that means I am WAY behind and I am so excited! I chose your story as the first to read and I CAN'T WAIT to read more of your writings. I hope that this doesn't put any pressure on you :-).

I felt the love, pride, anguish ALL the emotions that this story conveyed and I couldn't wait to read the next chapter each day.

Sorry to you and all the other writers( for I am not one)for my tardiness to this site. I see that I will have a WONDERFUL time in Middle-Earth with all of the writers doing such a loving and capable job of making me fall in love with Tolkien's characters all over again!

Thank YOU!

Idril, I am honored that you chose my story to read first, and it warms me to know that the tale managed to endear the characters to you. :-)

I am now writing "In Shadow Realm" and will post Chap 21 soon. I'd be delighted to have you join me and our beloved characters on this new journey - and what a journey it is turning out to be!

Hope to see you there, and thank you for your lovely review.

And here we are at the end of all things. Oh, how final partings hurt. It takes a hell of a lot of bravery to love someone, and these two were the bravest.

You touched on so many powerful themes of love and friendship, generosity and sacrifice, and really did a superb job of wresting all possible emotion and imagery from them.

It was a lovely story. Thank you.

"It was a lovely story. Thank you."

And thank you for having been one of those who inspired it. I think I began writing this some time after Legolas brought Aragorn 'home' after the man almost died in the cold.

Yes those two are/were the bravest, and we love them. I shall continue to keep them alive through stories for as long as I can, as I'm sure you will.

My deep appreciation to you once again.

I came accross the site and your story by accident but i thoroughly enjoyed the tale. I hope that you do more and will visit the site again.

Author Reply:

Thank you. :-) I do hope to write another soon. If you register (which is not difficult) and put me (or other authors) on author alert, they will notify you via email.

In the meantime, there is another one also available at this site, called Once Upon a Strongbow, in case you're bored and want to read something light. :-)
