I love the way that Aragorn is so considerate to Earnulf .Things look bad if orcs and cave trolls have appeared. You are a very gifted storyteller,I cannot stop reading ! Author Reply: Thank you so much for your kind words and I am glad you are enjoying reading this rather long story. Chapter 20 should be up sometime over the next couple of days. I find Aragorn a bit slippery to write, but I never doubt his heart is in the right place. Rose

After so long an absence the appearance of orcs seems especially ominous. I think the way you revealed them second hand had something to do with it as well. And then it turns out they have trolls. The stakes keep rising. Must...read...on..! ~TF Author Reply: Oops, and now I have finished the new HP I must get back to writing - you only have three more chapters to read to catch up to me! More mayhem ahead. Rose

Hey, you, Rose, don't you start reading ranger stories before you have updated, even better finished, your story. Please, please, please. Concentrate, work, I mean write, now! By the way I do really recommend "In the hands of the enemy", but not yet. Ye shall not read ranger stories! *stomps foot instead of staff on bridge, but the voice is the same* Author Reply: Dearest loyal grumpyguts, i didn't even read 'a matter of honour' until I had posted ch 11 to Theresa - save your wizardly displeasure for her now until she sends it back all fixed (it is a chapter that limped out like a lame duck - writing is no fun some times! ) "A Matter of Honour" was so good I was saving "In the hands of the Enemy" for when I finally work out an exciting way to tell youall what happens next, I am so sick of trailing these characters over ME! Laughed all over my breakfast when I got your post. Rose

Oh well, diddled again. *Imrahoil sighs resignedly* I had it all pictured in my mind, the villagers huddling in the inn, not knowing what's happening to them, their faces drained of life like Arwen's in the mirror ..., but no, a new twist, orcs and cave trolls on a rampage. "There have been no orcs sighted in Rohan for eighty years." I love this sentence, just one sentence and you're deep into the Fourth Age, still Middle Earth but Sauron etc. only a memory, explains Earnulf's innocence. And a love interest for him, that's nice. Has Elfwine got a palantir or why did Haldis expect eoreds to pop up when needed? Can't stand hysterical people. BUT I don't believe that Aragorn - greatest tracker since Orome or something like that - is not able to identify the track (do you really like the word spoor?) of a cave troll when he sees it, plot reasons or no. And where are Narvi and Celebrimbor, still lost under the Misty Mountains? And where is Treebeard? When do we see an Ent? Next chapter, please. Author Reply: Oh, what would I do without my ginger up from Imrahoil? Aragorn, you will note, easily recognised the characteristics of those tracks, but would hardly be expecting cave troll tracks on a riverbank. I am sure if Gimli had given him a couple of moments to think he would have come up with the right answer ( of some kind of trolls, anyway!) Fear not, the king is not losing his touch! N and C are occupying what I laughingly call a brain right now - I had to do a bit of research into the theology of M-E and some brush up on the history of the elves. So far I think my premise can be shoehorned into canon ( with a deep breath and a bit of a squeeze)so next ch next week if real life would just lay off a bit. Re Haldis, its the old 'never a cop around when you need one' syndrome, someone must be to blame for her misfortune and the King of Rohan will do! Sorry for being dilatory in answering your review, just love your comments. Rose

Yes, indeed, Rose...that is my question, too! WHY??? :-) This was a great chapter dealing with the villagers - it explained a great deal but left more questions than it answered! Well done, Rose! Now I will go crazy trying to figure out who - or what - is masterminding this sudden reappearance of orcs and cave trolls. I like Oda - she needs a sword and some lessons on being a shieldmaiden...she seems to have the command and temperament for one. Earnulf was engagingly tongue-tied as he tried to tell the story and the villagers were supremely fearful, as they should be. Had to appreciate Aragorn's and Legolas' reaction to the orc souvenirs and I liked Gimli's recognition and reaction to the smell of cave trolls (ick). This was great - only enquiring minds want to know WHY (along with WHO, WHAT ,WHEN, WHERE, and HOW!) :-) linda Author Reply: Thank you, linda, I am working on the six big questions believe me! That and some more plot - The very old twosome are demanding I spend some time on their story first. Loves ya Rose

Well yes, and a very good question it is too. Orcs and cave trolls sounds like a bad combination. The scene in the inn was well done. I could picture the villagers -- women, children, the old -- huddling together in terror. Author Reply: daw, thanks, I am glad that the pictures come alive for you. Rose

Oh my! Cave trolls! And orcs! Oda seems to have the shield-maiden genes of Rohan - even if she is an inn-keeper's daughter. Not to mention good hair. But the fate of Crossbourne's menfolk doesn't seem too promising. I'm glad to see Radagast is joining the party. I think he could prove an essential part of this mission! More soon, please. I can't wait! Author Reply: Bodkin, you are such a loyal reviewer, thank you. I suspect Oda is going to insist on being involved somewhere later in the tale, I am going to have to add a little about Crossbourne's men - wrote about them in the draft and forgot to include them in the chapter - notes are only any good if you read them, blast it!
