Another fine chapter. I especially like your detailed description of the cave.

"Gimli eyed the king then lifted his tankard again in two hands, and then paused looking into its brown depths as if truth might surface there." I like that sentence. I'm too ignorant to understand what's happening with Narvi and Celebrimbor other than that he seems to be trying to protect Arda and she willingly serves him. I imagine all will be revealed in time. The wasps dropping dead from the air was a nice, spooky touch. It seems the trouble is very widespread. With all the gathering elements and the brooding atmosphere this tale is really addictive. I haven't the faintes clue what is going to happen. What a fun read! ~TF Author Reply: Errm, and you trust that I have an idea what is going to happen? Only joking I do have a plan and I even know what is going to happen in the end, getting there is a little more of a problem though. Back to the keyboard and put the thinking cap on Rose.
Imrahoil | Reviewed Chapter: 11 on 7/4/2005 |
Another twist? You are having a go at Morgoth?? Pfft, it's probably just another dead-end, yes, no? As long as it's not a trap ... You know, there are definitely some strange similarities between you and Narvi. Do you fiddle with your rings a lot? Do you think you have to do everything to protect the sick elf in your cellar? Well, as long as there are no dead readers of yours or leaf blights in your vicinity it's probably not too bad. Ah, Treebeard, at last. At least he's alive. Snickering beeches and a boiling ent? Huhu, results in a snickering Imrahoil boiling with impatience for the next chapter. G/A/L/E are as well done as ever. Typo-alarm: I think it's Methedras Author Reply: More twists than a ball of string Imrahoil! I will check Methedras, given half a chance I will misspell anything - despite looking it up in the first place-LOL. Complete lack of an internal spell check, sorry, that is why Theresa is such a saint. Next chapter next week if I can just get these fellows into the forest - they are fighting me every step of the way. Morgoth is the best fun baddy I could find. Why he is behind what I laughingly call a plot will hopefully be revealed as the story progresses. Thanks for the review and the heads up. Rose

I like this even better on rereading. Aragorn is grown very wise. And very good at expressing himself. And I love Treebeard - those beeches are going to regret going up against him before too much longer. This is very clever and subtle. And remarkably interesting! Author Reply: You are the kindest of reviewers. Thank you Bodkin. I am having fun re-reading the master right now to get the flavour of the ents, sometimes writing is oK. Rose

Ai, Rose, another intriguing chapter! RL is very busy for me right now (daughter’s wedding coming up in two weeks!) but I’m delighted to see your muses are back and you are back with more of this story! So, Narvi and Celebrimbor are in an underground labyrinth (and what in the world is Celebrimbor making?) Treebeard held prisoner? Orcs herding cave trolls? And whatever is going on is causing widespread damage… Legolas’ interaction with the evil River-daughter was well done and I loved the appearance of Radagast, the way he speaks to the horse before Gimli and his ‘gift’ to the Elf, somehow granting him a respite from the burden of the Sea-longing. Hmm. I’m looking forward to seeing the connections between all these fascinating puzzle pieces – such vibrant images! I can’t wait for more. So keep writing! Looking forward to each new chapter, Ithildin *( Author Reply: Well, the best of weather and the best of luck to you. I hope your daughter's wedding is everything she hopes for and everything you hope for her. Take a little escape every now and then in fanfic-land, and thank your stars that you only have to deal with one or two generations of in-laws, out-laws and friends - just imagine an elven wedding, the seating plan! It brings me out in tears just the thought! Thank you for your kind words. I do hope I can get the puzzle to fit together in a semi- canon way. Should never have started meddling in the affairs of elves I suspect - way too late now! Thinking of you Rose

One of the things that continually impresses me about this story is how beautiful the images are without distracting from the story. They don't call attention to themselves; they just deepen our sense of this world. I like the idea of an ent "boiling with impatience." I wonder if the rest of us would be able to tell. Author Reply: You could only tell if you could read advanced leaf rustling and the occasional whippy branch.(LOL) Mind you given how big his feet are i wouldnt want to be sleeping under the shade of an angry ent either. Thank you for your kind words, mostly I try to cut description so I am glad what gets through my filter still works. Rose

Oh my - Narvi and Celebrimbor are confronting the great enemy? With Valda's aid? Does this put them on the side of the angels? Despite the strain they are putting on all living things. This is really fascinating stuff. And their hidey-hole seems to be prime Indiana Jones territory. It'll take Gimli to sniff his way through the traps. Fangorn doesn't seem very happy - hopefully Radagast and Legolas to the rescue. Earnulf seems delightfully straightforward. Oda and Earnulf? Maybe. Aragorn needs to look after himself more - he's not as young as he was - but his intentions seem good. I will have to reread this. Maybe with the rest, too. Just to pick up all the nuances! And Gimli and Aragorn had both better look out for the blond nursemaid. He's very quick with his knives! Author Reply: Do so love ambiguities - the greatest good for the greatest number perhaps. As always the tale is growing in the telling - do please let me know if you find some great plot hole I am falling into, my Silm. reading is intent but untutored, fools always do rush in where the more sensible wouldn't dare. From my reading of S the Valar sometimes seem to me to be a little like the ancient Greek deities(not meaning any offence to anyone here)ie somewhat fallible. And to my thinking why post a watch on a wall if it is actually impregnable? Plot food you see. Thanks, as ever, for the review. Rose
