Thain  by Lindelea 3 Review(s)

What a life to contemplate! No wonder Paladin chose to live on the farm. I would, too.

'If you slip your escort, it'll cost them a day of water rations at the very least.' DID YOU HEAR THAT, PIPPIN? If you didn't, perhaps Baragrim should shout it again - and rather louder.

I don't know! Just as Pippin was beginning to settle down and develop a bit of good hobbit sense, he get stuck with being a privileged, isolated, little heir of the Thain. This is not good.

'Lest he break the jesses before they're even tied.' Isum's got a pretty good grasp of what is going on - and Pippin is deserving of a good deal of pity here - and this cannot have helped his relationship with his father.

Good thing I know he turns out OK.

Author Reply: Ummm, I don't think Pippin was listening to the last bit. You're right, Barry ought to reiterate that last bit, while Pippin's still somewhat pliable, before all the spoiling, added to the resentment he already bears, turns his head.

I do like Isum; he's got his head on right, and he will remain an influence for good in Pippin's life, thankfully, being Headmaster at the Smials and thus in charge of all the young gentlehobbits' education.

Thanks!

Oh, dear! Poor Pip! What an introduction to life at the Great Smials! No wonder he came to resent and resist it in later years, and no wonder Paladin had a hard time with him later! Sheesh!

A steady stream of invitations, huh? And which cousin will he invite first, I wonder?

Author Reply: Hmmm. If I were Pippin, I'd invite all of them, issue standing invitations, "come any time, stay as long as you want, eat as much as you want", that sort of thing...

Poor Pippin. Sometimes I want to re-write the older stuff, make Paladin less harsh, Pippin less spoilt. If only I didn't dislike re-writing so much! (And, of course, the reason I set it all up that way in the first place was to allow for lots of character development, which makes characters more interesting to me, anyhow.)

Thanks!
