Drabbles, Vignettes and Such  by Gandalfs apprentice 7 Review(s)

I've been ploughing through your ficlets, and I just had to stop at this one to let you know how much I'm enjoying them! They're very well-written, and you manage to convey a lot of thought and emotion in few words. That takes both talent and reticence. Bravo!

Author Reply: Thanks! The relationship between Bilbo and Aragorn is one I really enjoy exploring.

If the way to a Hobbit's heart is through his heart and his leaf pouch, Aragorn certainly made in instant bee-line. Bilbo, the student of languages and history must surely have known the significance of that "Ar" at the beginning of the name of someone so obviously of strong Numenorean descent. I am sure it would not have taken him long to figure out what of the rest he could not wheedle out of Gandalf and his elven friends! Nicely done!

Author Reply: I think Aragorn told him himself! That's what Bilbo says in FotR, anyway. Wonderful old chap, IMO, Bilbo! I mean to write more about him....

This was an intriguing little vignette. I enjoyed, in retrospect, both the foreshadowing of Bilbo's later encounter with Aragorn as related in "The Fellowship ... " and his apparent rejection of that idea. When it was over, however, I wanted more.

Author Reply: The friendship between Bilbo and Aragorn is something I'd like to explore further, beyond the small pieces I've already written. I'll write "more" some day!

Thanks for reading,

What a nice little take on a possible first meeting of the two. I like this very much.

How wonderful! It makes perfect sense that Aragorn would consult with Bilbo about Gollum.

Author Reply: Yes, it struck me too that it must have happened that way. After all, Bilbo was the only person who had actually seen him, so Gandalf and Aragorn would have to consult him. It follows, then, that Bilbo was aware there was more to his ring than he at first thought. Thanks for reading!

A fitting explanation for the inspiration for the Riddle of Aragorn.

This is so true, Aragorn deserves many songs to be written about him !

Author Reply: This is a reference to the poem Bilbo wrote about Aragorn:

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Just gave me a thought--maybe I ought to retitle it with a quote from this poem! Thanks for the inspiration.
