Well, it seems I read a bit more than I first thought...(blushes). I suppose this will be the only time I will "heap" reviews--because I like to comment on specific details in each chapter. Especially for tales that are so well thought out and well written. Anyway... I am just enjoying all the interaction between Viola and Berilac! I *love* love stories! Oh, yes--I'm eye-balling your P&D tale for when I catch up. ;-) And *all* the hobbits learing how to swim! I have a great feeling all of this is going to snowball into something bigger later on, and I can't wait! Everyting is moving right along so smoothly--and I'm feeling real bad for little Bergil. Onto the next chapters...I took two today. :-) Pippinfan Author Reply: Oh yay! I came back after supper, and lo! and behold! three reviews from you and a new chapter of "Courtship"! I really feel like I'm back now--or I will when I finally get the last of my "little" stories up and can update this one again! I'm so very glad you like my Viola/Berilac romance. I've had *that* one in mind for a long time, too, as soon as I knew who was *going* on the embassy, in fact...

Legolas is no hobbit, indeed! But he is so hobbit-friendly that when he does something really elvish people remember. :) Lovely bit of Gimli looking out for Legolas at the end here. :D Author Reply: Legolas tends to "tone down" his Elvishness for his good friends, not wishing to overawe them, but that doesn't mean that he still does not think of things from an Elvish perspective, and things that to him are "little things" such as climbing trees tend to stand out to others. Gimli does look out for his friend. I don't often have Gimli saying a lot, but that doesn't mean he is not observing what's going on around him. And he keeps close watch on "his" Elf.

Poor little Bergil. At least it sounds not so very bad this time. *grins* Somewhere - don't remember where - I've read the remark "If you had 7 meals a day, you’d like round doors as well", and if I had to travel with Hobbits, I would end up *needing* a round door, I fear. The men will have to take care or they're going to don't fit in their armor any longer! Legolas seems to have overheard the discussion about swimming in spite of Gimli taking him away. Of course he has prompt found the right spot for this. But it is probably not so easy for him if it brings the sea-longing back. It was very sweet how Gimli sat himself at the foot of the tree to wait for Legolas. I am glad he is so understanding and tries to comfort our dear elf. Now I look forward to the swimming lessons! Author Reply: We will see. Ooh, I love that saying! Wouldn't I love to have a T-shirt saying that! Yes, hobbits are just going to spoil these Men, aren't they. Legolas never knows when something will set off the sea-longing, but Gimli is his best friend, and he'll just always be there for him.

Poor Bergil. Let's have some Bergil-cosseting. I like the beaver pool - it seems a good place to teach the reluctant hobbits to swim, although the water will be rather cold. Good thing the men are going to deal with the prisoners. I don't suppose they will bother too much with coaxing, either. The mention of the sea doesn't seem to have done Legolas any good, but at least he has the Dwarf sitting at the bottom of his tree ready to look after him. And he'll come round - he's very determined. Author Reply: Some Bergil-comfort coming up fairly soon, milady. Yes, it will be a bit cold, but probably refreshing, considering that it is nearly mid-summer. I thought it wise to have the Men teach the prisoners. Oh, Gimli will always look out for him. And yes, Legolas is very much determined. As he told Frodo at the end of "A New Reckoning" he is the stubborn son of Thranduil, and he will fight it back as long as he has a friend left to tie him to Middle-earth.

Lovely chapter. I had not realized that the talk of swimming would lead to a problem for Legolas but I can see it happening with a mention of the ocean. I love that Gimli is going to wait for him to come down. Such good friends and they know each other almost as well as the hobbits do. Author Reply: I didn't think about it at first either, except I already knew Borondir had learned to swim in the sea, and when he mentioned that in front of Legolas, it kind of evolved from there. My take on the sea-longing for Legolas is that it is usually just kind of a background thing that he manages to ignore most of the time, but now and then something unexpected triggers it, and he just has to let it work its way off. It's why he could understand this about Frodo. My idea is that the white jewel from Arwen kind of triggers sea-longing in Frodo even as it relieves his nightmares. Yes, at this point in time, Legolas and Gimli have already become best friends in spite of all their differences.

I must say, I'm looking forward to these swimming lessons. It should be interesting to see how all the hobbits react. And I just have to say "Aaawwww" over Gimli at the end there. He doesn't show it often, but he can be a softy. His unvoiced concern over "his Elf" is quite touching. Author Reply: Yes it is going to be interesting. Gimli never really says anything when he worries about Legolas. He just tries to be there for him.
