I just read the first five chapters of "Lesser Ring" and am abosolutely fascinated. I can't wait to read more.

This is interesting. Are you version of the Haradrim based on the ancient Egyptians? It certainly appears that their religion and land is.

Author Reply: Oh, am catching up on the reviews that came in while the computers were all down.

Yes, the land of Harad is indeed based on ancient Egypt, and I discuss that further in the Author's Notes at the end. I decided to put a Tolkien spin on the Egyptian land and its faith so as to make it consistent with Arda. Glad you find it interesting.

This is more and more intriguing. The family of the Farozi seems mostly to be decent people, and I begin to like them. No wonder they sent later the ambassador to take up diplomatic relations. And I think it would be amusing if one of them then still lives to meet the king ;-) Sohrabi is probably young enough for it. It would be a nice surprise for him, I think.

This will probably be Aragorn's first try to operate someone with cancer on his own, without help of Elrond? I suppose very few were able to do this so long ago, others than this great elven healer. It will be intriguing. But I hope there are no dire consequences for all of them. Aragorn's doubts are not easily to dismiss.

Can't wait to see how they will use the spies to their own advantage!

Author Reply: Once the identities of spies are known, they can be easily fed misinformation to the disadvantage of the enemy, and so I suspect these will be treated.

I would be surprised if Aragorn were not able to deal with the tumor after the experience he's had under Elrond. Of course, one never knows what might happen over the long run, of course.

You will learn that Ma'osiri had good reason to distance himself from Mordor, for Sauron's agents have sown the seeds of his growing distrust themselves. So it is, as Tolkien himself commented in LOTR, evil will often in the end causes damage to its own cause by seeking to do too much too soon. Or, to paraphrase Galadriel in BookVerse, often the very end evil seeks to avoid is brought about when those seeking to avert it go out of their way to attempt to do so.

More and more intriguing. I find myself wondering what Aragorn will do with Virubat--I suppose that he will take him with him somehow. And now it looks as though he will operate on the Farozi's cancer--it's fortunate that he has been trained by Elrond--I'm sure no other healer of that time would have been able to do so.

The bit of poetry was beautiful, and seemed very authentic sounding.

I am eagerly looking forward to more.

Author Reply: Partly based on the Song of Songs, partly on translations from Egyptian hieroglyphic poetry; glad you find it authentic sounding. And of course it would be Elrond's protege trained to use the Healing Hands of the King who would be able to remove such a growth.

As for Virubat, I've already written his disposition, so you shall see what you shall see when we get that far.

Thanks so much for the feedback.

Wow...So many layers to this chapter Larner. I don't know quite where to begin. I loved the reference to Elrond as, "The father of my heart...". There's a lovely term I read in a book a long time ago that called people who are family, but not blood family, as "Relatives By Love Alone". That's perfect for the relationship between Aragorn and Elrond.

The seeds of resistance towards Mordor are being sowed and at the very highest levels. I'm sure this will be touched on again by the time this story's finished. Call it a hunch. :o) And the spies are being identified as well. Always good to know who is in your own house, but not an ally.

Interesting twist on Aragorn going to try and heal the Farozi. From the way you wrote this, it sounds like this is the first time he will do something so complicated on his own. Scary for him, but a neccesary step in his evolution as a healer.

As always, looking forward eagerly to the next chapter!!

(and for once...no spelling mistakes. Amazing what happens when you read an update in the afternoon, instead of at night when the painkillers I need to help to sleep are kicking in... ;o) )

Author Reply: I think Aragorn would think of Elrond in that way, and am glad you like it. Yes, this is part of Aragorn's maturation as a healer, learning to trust his own judgment and skill. And to find out the spies and learn how to use them instead of being used by them is always important.

So glad you are enjoying it. Sorry to hear of the pain. The heat is doing me in, and as I'm in the Pacific Northwest, that's not even all that hot!
