| Does Hildigor have a girl he likes? Author Reply: I suspect Hildigor did have a girl he liked, but haven't gotten that far as yet! He will eventually appear in other stories, God willing I get to write all I'd like to do! Am glad you appreciate him here! | |

| I love the way that Eomer, and Elfwine and Eowyn and the Rohirrim shine in this one. And the sparring from horseback was wonderful! I could just see it in my mind's eye! And I love Pippin's explanation of hobbits and their cooking specialties--what a masterful touch that was! Author Reply: Here was the first good chance for the folk of Harad to see what Eomer and the Rohirrim are truly about. Elfwine and his pony; Eomer rejoicing to be out of the city and into the open on a horse and enjoying it with his friend, the mounted warrior; Eowyn finding a horse to care for almost immediately. And then to find out that even in a culture with servants to cook, the Master of Brandy Hall and the Thain of the Shire will take over the kitchen, and everyone EXPECTS it of them--what a contrast to those places where servants do everything for people, even applying their cosmetics! Glad you enjoyed it. | |

| Glad they got Benai to put down his sword and relax a little. Liked the picking out of horses and ponies, so Aragorn's long ago horse has has sired his current mount. Eomer is happy to be back on horseback, as is his son. Author Reply: What goes around comes around, and I suppose that is as true for horses as for anything else. As Aragorn was supposed to be quite extraordinarily tall, he'd need a horse that would fit his frame; obviously Perdui-bred horses fill the bill! Glad you appreciate the horses and seeing Benai finally start unbending a bit. Thanks for the feedback. | |

| Another wonderful and thought-provoking chapter, Larner. Glad Pippin is thinking about the lives of any disabled children born in the Shire, and he will certainly take an interest, being the future Thain. I'm sure Merry and Sam would feel equally concerned once the thought was in their minds. I love your portrayal of Eomer and Elfwine. The little lad is certainly a future horse-lord! A great image of Eomer and Aragorn sparring too, and I loved the descriptions of the different horses and how their riders chose them. Looking forward to more. Author Reply: It always struck me that for the Horse Lords, those who appeared to know not horses would be seen as beneath notice, and so small Elfwine's comment grew. And, being Eomer's son, of course he'd have probably been riding since before he could even walk. Gotta be! And as I've repeated, I've had this dream of two on horses, obviously Eomer and Aragorn, sparring in the sand of a desert--this image was bound and determined to make its way into the story. And the rights of the disabled is something that will keep making its way into what I write--an occupational hazard, I fear. | |

| A most enjoyable chapter,though I'd hoped for more adventures at the temple.It worries me to see them all travelling together as who would rule Gondor,Arnor and Rohan if the boat were to sink for example ? The swimming scene was most enjoyable and I liked the discussion about the disabled being kept out of sight even in civilised Gondor. Thank you so much for your kind review,you obviously understand poor FAramir's suffering well. Author Reply: Ah, Lindahoyland, you have indeed absorbed the natural concern for the lines of succession that is native to your people. If the barge sank, I suspect that Aragorn, Arwen, Legolas, and Pippin would do well at making certain the others were safe. | I loved little Elfwine and the pony, truly a Rohirrim boy! And I've enjoyed how you have written Eomer, you write him well. I enjoyed the sparring in the desert between Eomer and Aragorn on horseback - the people of Rohan truly did miss their horses! Very interesting discussion at the beginning about how different cultures treat the wounded, or those afflicted with disease, or just born with various things that society brands as handicapped in some way. I especially thought it was meaningful for Pippin since he will be the Thain and he needs to look into that in the Shire and see what is happening there. Of course it is important in Gondor too, but Aragorn at least had a level of awareness - though I know there is always more that needs to be done. As Ruvemir told him, whole communities need to be educated. Heck it needs to happen here and now - let alone back then! :) It was a good discussion and it was good for Pippin and Isumbard to see that kind of thing. Nicely done. Author Reply: Ruvemir's bitterness is seen in the blindness community, and even among the most capable and integrated of visually impaired folk. The number who face unrealistic expectations, whether they are too high or too low or just not appropriate to the individual involved, is staggering. (Is the special ed teacher coming out in me? It certainly ought to be!) The comment he makes about prejudice openly expressed being more welcome than that hidden behind glib words and locked doors I've heard stated with equal anger by those with disabilities and those who are black. It's a damning statement of the reality of life. Am so glad that at last small Elfwine is coming into his own, for the three small boys have just stayed in Avrieth's shadow, mostly. About time he starts letting these strangers know he's the future Lord of Rohan, I think! Glad you enjoy how I present Eomer and the Rohirrim. So far they've let Aragorn the King and Faramir the diplomat do most of the speaking for the group, for what do they know of living in stone cities or along great rivers? And I've dreamed that encounter several times before I wrote the chapter. I think Eomer was demanding his due. | |

| Thain Peregrin will find a way to properly educate hobbit mannikins and other hobbits with disabilities, no doubt! And I’m sure the Master and the Mayor are of the same mind. I loved the display of affection between Amonrabi and Sohrabi. The open affection Aragorn shows to Pippin and the others rubs off, no doubt, and it is good to see it. Hmmm ... one could think Rustovrid’s daughter is about to get interested in Benai ... that could be a fascinating match. No doubt, little Elfwine is the future King of the Mark! I was amused how Éomer took him to the horses immediately after his birth. Would my own pony were so cooperative as this pony to him- Skerpa can be quite stubborn at times! It was nice how the Northerners choose their horses, and I loved the sparring between the two Kings. They can’t refuse a little challenge, can’t they? Another part I enjoyed was how Mablung urged Benai in the water. According to his origin, he surely enjoys swimming very much, and I’m glad Mablung noticed his longing and reminded him he isn’t the only one guard there and can have time off to have some fun! Now I am curious how the priests are going to interpret the doves! And I wonder if the cooks of Sohrabi have to learn to prepare ducks Shire-style ;-) You’ve over three tousand books? I would feel very at home there! :) Last time I counted my books I had over six hundred, but that was twenty years ago. At the moment my books are divided between my own flat and my mother’s flat, but I’m going to purchase a new shelf for my study, over the whole wall at one side of the room, and then I can take all the many books with me that are still at my mother’s flat. I think I need to count them then – I’m quite curious how many it are now! Author Reply: Books first--I've been collecting books from my youngest years, and that makes well over fifty years' worth. A few years ago I started a library database for them, and have most but not quite all in it--don't have the most of my little-kids' books I braille for my students. I've had to buy homes to fit the bookcases, don't you know! Heh! I've admitted much of my own writing is influenced by that of others, and one person wrote a very lovely one-shot of Eomer taking the newborn Elfwine out to be introduced to the Mearas, so I've referenced that here in this chapter. It's such a lovely image! But I suspect that the horses and ponies even of the Haradrim would respond to the mastery of the Horse Lords! My special ed background is making itself felt again in the discussion regarding the beggars at the temple, and both the Shire and Gondor will be making even more concerted an effort to give equal chances to all. (And be forewarned the discussion will rise again, for it's not over yet, in Middle Earth or here in our world, either.) I'd thought to pair up Benai with Gilmorien's sister, but somehow it appears Rustovrid's oldest daughter, who is really too old to be considered a child, seems to be eyeing him first. I had to get him also to relax a little, also. And the openly displayed affection of the Northerners has to work positively at allowing the Haradrim to follow suit in the presence of others. And the image of Aragorn and Eomer sparring on horseback has been filling my dreams for nights--it was demanding to be expressed. For Eomer to be out of the city back on a horse again must have felt like freedom, and I'd think he'd feel a bit giddy and want some physical release. He's there, and Aragorn's there, and they're carrying their swords and all.... Am not certain how the priests would interpret the flight of the released doves; but you will see part of that in the next chapter, sans priests, I fear, for now at least. As for the duck, I suspect Ankhrabi will want that recipe, at least! Heh! Thanks for the feedback! | |
