Yes, even without your author's note I realise that Gimli is working on his own tomb. Somehow this little piece brought an ache to my throat and tears to my eyes. You have captured Gimli's voice so well, and shown how much he has grown over his long/relatively short life. Thanks. Author Reply: Wow, thanks! I am really so happy it pleased you. I tried to write dignified bookGimli, rather than slightly goofy movieGimli, but movieGimli kind of crept in there. Luckily bookGimli did most of the talking. *Embarrassed* Er, well, the author's note is leftover from when I posted this on Fanfic.net, a place where I have to be a bit more obvious. I just copy/pasted this story from there, as you can see. Suppose I'd better go remove that now...*crawls off*

I'd figured that Gimli was doing his own tomb from the monologue, and I love the voice you've given the old dear. Lovely, lovely, well done.

This was beautiful, and so typical of Gimli, even down to asking for a cloth because the dust was making hia eyes water - when we know he was shedding tears at the thought of Legolas being left alone. One can leave the Shire, but it never entirely leaves us, and that is not a bad thing, no, not at all. It is a kindly memory that warms our old bones. So true - I guess the Shire never really leaves us.

This is absolutely stunning. Yes, I can imagine Gimli talking just this way to Gandalf as his time draws near (and he would still call him Gandalf, in his stubborn Dwarvish way, and not Mithrandir or Olorin, LOL!) I loved all you had him saying, but most especially what he said about the hobbits and the Shire. And this: One can leave the Shire, but it never entirely leaves us, and that is not a bad thing, no, not at all. And isn't that so very true of *us*? Or why else would we be doing this? Author Reply: (Sorry it took so long to do this, btw. I had to reformat my pc.) Thank you very much for your kind words! Yes, somehow I just couldn't picture Gimli calling Gandalf anything but...Gandalf:o) That's what he's used to, and by golly, you know he'd stick to it. Gimli sort of took off and wrote his own words here-I almost felt as though I was taking dictation-but those words about the Shire are my words through and through, and I really meant them with all my heart. I feel so blessed to have Tolkien's world to play in.
