Moments in Time  by Larner 24 Review(s)

Larner! I love it! what wonderful stories! OK, I didn't review 'stricken from the book', but I read it first, and WOW! Both of these are just amazing pieces of work my dear! I really like how the gods work to heal the hobbits... I imagine that's just how it would be. And for the Book of Bagginses... very poingnant and refreshing... I liked meeting another cousin and knowing that old views could be changed and worked for good. Thank you for sharing! :)

Author Reply: Oh, I appear to have missed this review. I'm sorry--didn't mean to ignore you here.

Am so glad you appreciate this story and "Stricken from the Book," and hope you read some of the following ones as well. The Baggins twins are featured in my story "The Ties of Family," and are the almost hidden heirs Frodo leaves behind as he abandons Middle Earth.

And this story of "A Message and A Bottle" was one that refused to resolve itself for weeks until suddenly it fell together. Am so glad so many enjoyed it.

Thanks so much for the review.

Now that my PM is behaving as it ought again--*after* it's battery died and I lost everything, of course--I can put stories on a flashcard again and read on the go without the bulky laptop. So I took this one and "Parting Gifts" with me today, as I knew I would be out from late morning till late afternoon.

This was so wonderful and touching! Poor old Toby. Pippin's idea certainly seems--original, but of course it had to work. If only Frodo had sent them a picture of himself, but I suppose he couldn't. I was crying by the end, right in the passenger seat of the car. My family won't let me forget it now: "What's wrong? Alergies?" "No, no, it's this story--it's so happy it's sad!" "Oh, that is pathetic!" LOL! But don't mind, and I like to cry over a good story. This is one of my favourites of yours.
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Well, as you can see this one ties into the mathom of the bottle story in "The King's Commission," and you already know I love tying my stories together. Aren't you glad Pippin's idea worked?

But I've seen how we do find ourselves wanting tangible proof the lost one is well and happy; this would constitute such a wish-fulfillment in Middle Earth, I think.

As for your family and their reaction to the story--hehehehehe! You have me giggling! I, too, like to cry over a good story, you see.

This is beautiful.

Author Reply: I'm so very glad you like it, Hanci. One that took time to write, but it turned out well indeed.

Thank you so much for letting me know how much it pleased you.

Superb! Simply wonderful! I'm not much into stories after the Great Ring Tossing Ceremony, because Frodo going away, for me, was just too hard to bear and almost always these type of stories are just too fanciful, full of wishful thinking. But YOUR story, A Message and a Bottle, was believable. And very well written. I'm glad Marigold picked it for one of her Best Pics. Thanks for writing such a nice, sweet addition to such a wonderful but sad story.

Author Reply: Somehow I managed to miss this review.

I am so glad you found this believable and a proper addition to canon. There is so often a need for us to know those we love are there still, and this story was just insisting it be written for so very long.

And I am so very glad Marigold recommended it. It is a great honor.

Wonderful!! Beautiful!!! Such a wondrous gift in so many ways. The wine, the sending and returning of the bottle, and the story itself.

Thank you, Larner!!

Author Reply: So glad you liked it, Pearl. Have been out of town for the last few days, so missed this review--please forgive the tardiness of the response.

I know that for me wanting to make contact at times has been intense; and I think that in the case of Frodo the desire of the others to have something tangible to demonstrate his awareness and love would be pretty strong. The idea of this had literally haunted me for months before I first wrote it, and then I had to do some crucial rewriting to get the ending right. Am so glad you enjoyed it as you did.

What a beautiful story! I can just picture Frodo, Bilbo and Gandalf drinking a salute to absent friends, then sending the empty bottle back to Middle Earth. Many thanks to Ulmo for letting the bottle get through and find just the right hobbits with its message.!

Author Reply: This story has indeed struck a chord with many people, and, for all the trouble it gave me in its writing, ended up one of the most successful I've written. I am honored you enjoyed it also.

Yes, the toasts drunk on both sides of the Sundering Sea, and the joy of knowing tangibly that the love is still there, and that all did the right thing.

Thanks so much for letting me know you enjoyed this.

This is just amazing, Larner! I just adore it. It brought tears to my eyes. Just the idea of them getting to communicate with Frodo, and that Ulmo was helping them along - it's gorgeous. Thank goodness for Pippin and his hopefulness and optimism! Thank you for this. It's just outstanding

Author Reply: I rejoice that you enjoyed it so. I felt that it was a fitting follow-up for Pippin's and Isumbard's adventures in Harad. The idea for it, however, had been working its way through my awareness for months, and finally had to be expressed. And, yes, Pippin's optimism was very much a part of the success of the venture. The desire to send and receive something tangible must have been overpowering at times.

Thank you so much for your appreciation for the story.

Simply amazing! I just found this tonight and I love every word! I could see Pippin insisting on sending the bottle on the little boat with that child-like faith that he always has, could see Sam struggling to write a proper note and I could see Merry desperately hoping for a reply. I was so pleased when it reached Frodo and even more pleased when it returned to the Shire. This was wonderful and I plan to read it again and again!

Author Reply: I'm so glad that you enjoyed it so, GW. Hope it continues to please through rereadings.

Thank you so much for letting me know. And I, too, found myself enjoying just those attributes in our three who remained for so long in Middle Earth.

What a wonderful, sweet story, Larner! I am so glad they had some contact with each other! I don't doubt that a regular correspondence would be devoutly desired now that the first, shall we call it, s-mail (sea mail) worked.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Personally, I doubt they'd try it again. When the bottle was sent little Faramir Took was still a baby; the response comes into their hands so long afterwards. Just knowing the first message got through and they got a tangible response would be relief enough, I think.

One of the plot devices I've put into my stories that's mentioned in both The Ties of Family and Lesser Ring is that now and then when Aragorn and Frodo are beneath their respective White Trees they become briefly aware of one another, and sometimes others are aware of Frodo, too. These brief moments of communion and the rare visions Frodo might share with Aragorn as depicted in Lesser Ring are one thing; but we so NEED something tangible to accept that the love is being perceived; and I suspect that Sam, Merry, and Pippin truly needed that reassurance that Frodo was again knowing peace in his soul and to have that tangible sign of it to hold in their hands as in their hearts.

Thanks so for the feedback.

The story about the bottle made me cry and the story about Aragorn hammering his thumb made me laugh. What a lovely way to begin a Sunday. Thank you!

Author Reply: Well, apparently we've elicited the full range of emotions between the two stories! Glad you loved both of them. The next story I'm working on is sheer angst, I fear.

Thanks so much for the feedback.
