For the first time Derehild spoke up, “Surely not one of the holbytlan?” she asked. I'm pretty sure you said Derehild does not speak Westron. Sorry if I'm getting nitpicky. Author Reply: You are keeping me nimble! I had to think a moment to remember my characters! Actually, Derehild speaks Westron, though heavily accented, while the mother Bertrade was the one who could not speak Westron. I don't mind nitpicky-- it shows you are engaged with the story!

Oh, I was waiting for the prisoners to start plotting something yes! It is good that Legolas is with them and has his stealth and Elven hearing. :D The world is little, isn't it? This family in Rohan knows Bergil - how nice! Author Reply: Yes, Legolas is quite handy to have around. And since Clovis and Dago are not exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer, they forgot to take him into account, since he is not "officially" one of their guards, LOL! Well, Middle-earth especially is little. I would imagine that anyone who worked in the HoH during the Siege would have known Bergil, since there were only a few of the boys there to run errands.

Hobbits aren't used to looking UP for eavesdroppers, are they? And Legolas, the wood elf, was in a perfect place to do just that. Now, to see how today's foray will work out.... Author Reply: No, they don't tend to look UP, and I have a feeling that even if they had, they would not spot Legolas unless he wanted them to...

Oh silly hobbits - don't make things worse for yourselves! Let's hope at least one of them is growing some sense! Author Reply: They are rather silly hobbits. And one of them *is* beginning to grow just a bit...

Things are going to heat up, I see. Well, theoretically Dago is right, if they have any chance to escape, then it will be now. But they will run in a nice little trap, I suppose, after Legolas eavesdropping their plans. That was so much fun! They should check the trees before talking about this **very* evil grin*. But you know, I despise Clovis more and more. To think his brother a coward because he is only more sensible and to see his father as useless! A quite nasty lad, really! Ah, now we know why there in the farm are Rohirrim - I had wondered because Rohan is so far away. Nice story! It is good they are being so helpful. And they know Bergil :) Author Reply: Yes, they are running in a trap. Hopefully finding that out will take some of the ginger out of them, LOL! Clovis *is* pretty despicable, isn't he? Yes, I see these uninhabited areas as being sort open to homesteading, as the American West once was. Aragorn would want to repopulate, and the Dunlenders tended to stay towards the southern reaches.

I hope Legolas and Targon are setting up the Dim Hobbits. An escape under Legolas's unnoticed elven supervision would be quite good for them. A couple of days without food and they would be much more amenable. Cado is, I hope, showing that difficulties can stimulate the development of the odd brain cell. Whereas his father is demonstrating that some respond to adverse circumstances by losing all backbone. Not that he had much to start with. Bergil and Freddy indulging in some serious gourmandising together was rather lovely. Nothing like sharing food - with boys and hobbits. Very important. The extended family of farmers and retired warriors is really appealing - they are developing a life of their own and might end up demanding their own story! I love the way they all interconnect - and I'm glad the party has been invited to stay for a while, to top up their stores. Good stuff. Author Reply: I wasn't very subtle, was I? LOL! You'll have to wait and see, but don't forget that Elves do have a mischievous side. The votes are definitely stacking up in Cado's favor... I just love Bergil and Freddy together. And we'll see a bit more of the family soon.

With a little more time to leave a coherent review... I like the farm family, good, solid, down-to-earth people, each an individual. (I like that touch, that one brother is a soldier, while the other is a farmer who turned soldier by necessity, in the desperation of those dark days.) I agree that Bergil is a "dear boy". And will we perhaps see Beregond in this story? How I love Beregond. I think he remains my favourite of the "Men" in JRRT's story. I like your description of Freddy (businesslike) and Bergil's (growing boy) manner of eating. Hmm. Targon seems to be playing right into the renegade hobbits' plans. 'nough said. Author Reply: Well, I thought it would be more realistic if at least one of them had some extensive farming experience. Beregond will probably not make his appearance until the sequel to this, when the hobbits finally make it to Minas Tirith. Hobbits and growing boys have a lot in common, don't they? Ah, you, uh, noticed that, did you? (I really should be a bit more subtle with my foreshadowing...)

So nice to see more of this. I love the way everyone has stories about the quest and that no matter where they travel or who they meet someone has heard of Merry or Pippin and this time even Bergil. It's fun to have a look at them all through the eyes of others. Am I way off or have elf ears gotten wind of something important? Just a thought. Author Reply: Well, outside the borders of the Shire, the Quest is quite the most important event to have taken place in the whole of the Third Age. And anyone who was a warrior would have been involved in one of the Ring War battles. As for Bergil, since he was one of the lads assigned the HoH, then it seemed only logical that any of the healer's assistants would have met him at least once or twice. No, you aren't way off. I was about as subtle as a *hammer* with that hint. (Speaking of hammers...? I'm anxiously awaiting another update from you...)

You can't leave me hanging like this, lol! Please update soon! Good gracious me--I hope Dago gets his... I don't think they'll get too far. ;-) I really do like this simple farm family...and you have written their characters and backstory so very well. :-) Bergil being the connection between them is very clever on your part. Can't wait to see a reunion between them. :-) Most excellent chapter! Pippinfan Author Reply: Well, no, I don't suppose they will. My hints were not too subtle, I'm afraid, LOL! I'm glad you like Beorhthelm's little clan. When I realized who and what they were, I had to know what they were doing there. And since I was quite sure that Merewen had worked among the healers, she would at least have met Bergil. Thanks ever so!

Read with relish and delight. Ah, Cado, you're getting wiser. Keep it up. (that last directed both to Cado and the author, BTW) Author Reply: So glad you are enjoying it! It's taken me a while to get it up. The Bad Guys are not nearly as much fun to write as the Good Guys. We shall see how far Cado's burgeoning sense goes.
