Dreamflower's Mathoms I  by Dreamflower 8 Review(s)

Bilbo may have lived through a lot of births in his years, and seen many new parents and know a lot about newborns, or what they look like anyway, but even hobbits can surprise each other in a pinch. Those blue eyes could mesmerize anyone. A lovely first meeting.

Author Reply: Yes, they can. And I think this *particular* little hobbit was meant to mesmerize Bilbo--he was certainly born with the full share of Fallohide charisma!

I'm glad you like my take on that important moment!

"And then he opens his eyes. Oh my!"

Oh my indeed! Bilbo will never think all babies are the same again. :) I love this!
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Yes, those *eyes*! 8-D

It's amazing what a little personal interest will do to one's perspective, isn't it?

I think I have read this before, but this is certainly worth a second reading. Bilbo thinking Frodo just another infant and then this. Frodo was certainly more than he expected.

Author Reply: Thank you! It always is a pleasure to find someone likes something well enough to give it a second try!

And no, Frodo was not just another baby, was he?

Sadly, Bilbo is right. Newborns are really only attractive to their besotted parents. But he has the right words to say - and Frodo has made an impression! Very sweet.

Author Reply: Yes, it's true that they usually need a couple of weeks or so to start looking cute and cuddly, and not quite so unfinished. But with those eyes, Frodo *could* make an impression even at such an early stage...

Awww.

I love the first-person perspective. I hardly ever see Bilbo written this way.

His candid thoughts are amusing, and so true! (Though he'd never say them out loud...)

O my!

Author Reply: You know, I hadn't thought about it. This one just came to me that way.

Newborns are a bit red and raw looking, there's no denying it.
But oh, those eyes!

Love at first sight! On both sides!

Author Reply: Yes, indeed. In fact, from this time on, they will have their birthdays together.

I envisioned Bilbo being there, but this is nice--and at Frodo's first look, either way, Bilbo's heart is thoroughly lost!

Author Reply: I've read a number of takes on Bilbo and Frodo meeting the first time, from stories that don't have them meet until Frodo's parents die, or until just before he decides to take Frodo in, to stories where Bilbo is present at the birth, and one in which he actually delivers Frodo. No matter what the scenario, though, I think it would be the eyes that would tell the story.

Oh yes, Frodo's wonderful blue eyes! Sometimes I wonder if Peter Jackson knows what he did to the fan(fiction) world with chosing Elijah for the role of Frodo! His eyes are certainly the first thing one notes as they are so striking. No wonder Bilbo was so amazed!

Author Reply: I am quite sure PJ knew *exactly* what he was doing--he as much as said that Elijah's eyes were the reason he got the part. And for those who have enjoyed the films, even if they are firmly rooted in book-verse, those eyes have to have influenced their own views of Frodo. I know they have for me. As many times as I had read the book before, I'd not had a clear vision of the hobbits in my head. But the instant I saw them on the screen, I knew they had been captured perfectly.
