Nope, no decision at all to make for them, and Aragorn knew that but he had to ask. Merry is so perceptive and even if all the hobbits know the others worry about them I too doubt that Frodo knows exactly how much they worry about him. Pip is indeed growing up fast and lying around in those boats has given them all time to think. Merry is right about Boromir of course, he acts strahger and stranger and does not see Frodo as a person or the hobbit he is but as the ringbearer. Scary, that. And we all know how it ends...

Missed this one as it was posted. The poor hobbits, having now to make that decision, and now being aware that Boromir is being tempted by the Ring. A wonderful shorter chapter.

"If only one of the eagles could fly Frodo to the mountain, he mused, and he could just toss the Ring overboard... then just a short flight home... if only... finally he fell asleep." Wonderful :) I love the imagery of "...toss the Ring overboard..." That would have been a blessing indeed - though the story would be so much the less for it ;) LOL Well done - so very well done :)

just want to tell you i'm enjoying your version of the Fellowship's journey in the Great River--i really enjoyed the last chapter about choices-- It does sound very reasonable that Aragorn would alert Merry to the imminent decision that he and Pippin must make. I would even think that Aragorn would insist upon them following Boromir to Minas Tirith as he would insist that Legolas and Gimli to do so as well... I think in The Breaking of the Fellowship, it was mentioned that only he and maybe Legolas? (not sure) should accompany Frodo and Sam... I loved that bit with Gimli and Legolas musing about the usefulness of hobbits. That was just so precioussss! =) And i also enjoy references to Frodo's light. =) Good job! I'm keeping up with this as well! Can't wait for more. :)

If only one of the eagles could fly Frodo to the mountain, he mused, and he could just toss the Ring overboard... then just a short flight home... if only... finally he fell asleep. Yes, if only... but what would have become of this awesome story? But I admire the faithfulness of Merry and Pippin - and Merry's sharp-eyed understanding that something is utterly wrong with Boromir. Extremely well done, dear.

Of course Merry and Pippin would continue on! I loved their little conversation and also all the special care Pippin has been getting. And Merry's observation that Pippin is growing up...*loves*

i liked the way Aragorn talked to Merry about having to choose where to go and how Pippin had already chosen.Poor Boromir, the tradegy is growing closer and this story brings out just how tragic events were.

* "Are you scared something will happen to me in... in...?" He pointed across the River. Merry just looked at him and said nothing. "Silly," Pippin smiled and touched his still-tender bruise. "Something can happen anywhere." Merry sighed. "You're growing up so fast, Pip, it's hard to keep up." Pippin lay down again, a bit sorry he had sat up so fast. "I'm scared for you too, you know." He was quiet for a moment. "But I'm mostly scared for Frodo. Let's help him get rid of that awful Ring and go home. All right?" * Oh, I just adore this exchange! So brave, the both of them, so loving, so loyal. I've loved this story from the start, just not said so because of life's current craziness. But this is a gem dandy, and I'm enjoying every word of it. Especially the above passage. :-)

LOL - why couldn't the eagles just take Frodo? The answers are clear though why that couldn't happen, but it's great that you had one of the Fellowship muse on that. Pippin does think about a lot of things. That's why he always has so many questions. :)

I have always wondered why they *didn't* just have the eagles take them...but then we wouldn't have our wonderful story, huh? keep up the great work, kiddo.
