I discovered this through the GMA's and... my, but that's absolutely hysterical. "We have dispensed with protocol and replaced it with alcohol! It's much better, you know." Abssssselludely. And absolutely brava. Would you mind if I translated this into german? I have a site with Tolkien fanfiction where I collect the best stories I can find. If you want, you can have a look here: http://www.cuthalionsbogen.de/stories.html *still giggling* Cúthalion Author Reply: Thank you - I'm glad you enjoyed the story, because I had great fun writing it. Drunken hobbits and Rangers are adorable. I'd be delighted and flattered if you wanted to translate the story, and I hope the giggles continue.

My dear BB! That was delightful!! I feel as if I were eavedropping on the whole lot of them in "the White Wizard" the dialogue was that easy and flowing!! Wonderful! I loved the account of the different misdeeds of the party when growing up! Also the listing and commenting upon the varying pubs of the land. Well done!! Hmmm! The Black Swan known as the Dirty Duck!! Ah memories!! Others are wonderfully invent. I like the sound of "The Tree and stars!" Love it dear!! Author Reply: So glad you liked it, MM. I was hoping the description of little Estel would make you laugh - it was your story which made me think of him as a 'mischievous little bundle.....' Thought you'd like the pub names! All that research paid off!

What a darling story, BB! I just loved it! First time back in a loooong while, and not only do I find a wonderful story, but I read the one it referenced, too! I love it when things tie together unexpectedly! How I would have loved to see this in the movie... I could totally see it in my head. Drunk Faramir and Aragorn, and the stories! Too cute! You always do just a good job with the hobbits... and the men too! :) Author Reply: I would have loved to see this in the film! :-)) Yes, I have a much too vivid imagination sometimes. Delighted to see you back again - hope you've found the other 'Rufus stories' in Shire Sketchbook. I've done at least one more since the last time you dropped by. I think I am a hobbit - I'm short and I love the countryside and could live in a hobbit-hole quite happily. :o)

Entirely too funny! I can never resisit drunken hobbits! Author Reply: Who can resist drunken hobbits? There will be more - and a King, two Stewards etc. - in a future chapter of 'Birthday Surprises.' I had entirely too much fun with this. Glad you had fun too.

I love the idea of Aragorn and Faramir sneaking down to lower circles to have a beer. I also love the names of the pubs, and would love to go to one called the bouncing bunny. Author Reply: Yes, I love the 'Bouncing Bunny' and it was very kind of Dreamflower to allow me to mention this wonderful hobbity name. I like to think Aragorn and Faramir would have enjoyed sloping off to an inn occasionally.

This absolutely made my day - I can only imagine what Eowyn and Arwen would have to say if they could see Faramir and Aragorn staggering up the levels of Minas Tirith. "It comes in quarts?" Pippin said excitedly. "Then I'll..........." Good old Pippin - evidently his trip to the Prancing Pony didn't curb his enthusiasm for ale. He can always be counted on to liven things up. Beautiful story - I look forward to seeing more of your work. Author Reply: Most of my stories posted here on SoA are set in my own AU - I like to give Frodo a happier ending than the book, although I know the book ending is the 'right' one. I try to keep everything else in canon except his leaving. I have written some strictly canon stories though. Yes, I wonder what Arwen and Eowyn would say if they could see their menfolk staggering home. :-)) Pip would be very taken by the sight of a quart of ale, I think. :-))

"I think we're drunk as well," Sam murmured. "Unless we've got two King Elessars." "We? You think I'm intoxi......into........intocixa...........drunk?" Frodo tried to look offended but rather spoiled the effect by staggering sideways into Pippin, giggling hysterically. LOL! Great story, Baggins Babe! A very funny drinking contest, which ended in a tie, I think :) I also loved this: "And as you can tell, Merry's waistcoats disobey every rule of good taste and colour co-ordination but no-one tells him off about it - except me." No-one, except Frodo, would have dared to say this aloud ;-) Author Reply: Nothing better than drunken hobbits - there will be some in 'Birthday Surprises' soon too. Not to mention a King, two Stewards............. I suspect Frodo would be the only one to criticise Merry's sartorial leanings. Not that Merry will take any notice!

*ROOOFL* I shouldn't read these stories at work! Thank Godness I was alone in my office so early in the morning! I don't dare to guess what the others would've thought about my laughing fit! Honestly, that was priceless! I loved 'Protocol and pipeweed' back then (and couldn't get rid of the image of Denethor overly obesessed with ridiculous protocol ever since then!), but you've outdone yourself with this! The explanations how hobbits would react to these rules and their recounting of childhood misdeeds ... *giggles* ... 'a mischievous little bundle who was never out of mud and trouble' indeed! One of the things I loved was how Faramir was able to relax and enjoy himself. It's true he hadn't much joy in the last years, and I am so glad Aragorn decided to change that! The names of the inns were fun, too! And then the end, their conversation on the way home and Gandalf's dry comment ... *LOL* Thank you for a lot of fun! Author Reply: I am picturing you in your office, giggling madly. Glad it gave you a good laugh anyway. In Britain we have some very strange pub names and I figured the Shire would be much the same. I never know why such diverse things as frogs and nightgowns are paired - the mind boggles! Poor Gandalf - persuading four tipsy hobbits to go to bed without trying to burn the house down would be one of his more difficult tasks, I think!

LOLOLOLOL.........all those names........the Pissed Peewit.....the Frog and Nightgown....the Bouncing Bunny.......gotta love it.....teeheehee..... But whoooaaa.....the monster hangovers everybody is gonna have! Owww!!! A thorough delight--thanks for the giggles!!! Author Reply: We have very odd pub names in Britain - most, if not all, of those do exist! Yes, the hangovers will be horrendous i should think. Anyone trying to wake the King should do so very, very carefully! Glad you enjoyed the story and that it made you laugh.
