Burden of Guilt  by Linda Hoyland 3 Review(s)
BodkinReviewed Chapter: 39 on 11/29/2005
I think Aragorn is right - if he hadn't been able to get Faramir to reveal his fears here, he never would have been and they would have simply eaten him away. And he is so right to tell Faramir that what didn't happen was no more than another form of abuse and cruelty - and to look on Mahrod's touch as no more than his use of whip and boot. Don't know that he would have been able to convince him, though, if he hadn't been able to assure Faramir that nothing further happened.

And Arwen, bless her, is right. (Make a note, Elessar.) Revealing his own weakness / distress / need enabled Faramir to take a step away from his own. He is one who will always give of himself - and if Aragorn needs his help, then he'll give it. (Remember that for the future, Elessar. Burn it into your brain.)

Now Faramir can begin to heal. Thank goodness.

Author Reply: Faramir was wasting away before his very eyes,so it was very fortunate that Aragorn used the last chance so wisely.I fear though that even he may not have been able to help had Faramir's greatest fear been true.Begging Faramir to help was a way of giving Faramir some control back in his life and appealing to his innate goodness.Thank the Valar for Arwen's insights !
Thank you for your very thought provoking and much appreciated review. You obviously have thought a lot about this chapter and I feel honoured.

A heart-rending chapter! But Faramir is finally revealing what's been eating away at him since his ordeal began; so perhaps this is the turning of the tide that he desperately needs. If it isn't too late!

Author Reply: Thank you so much for your review.I'm glad you found it heart-rending as that was my intention !

First, one small yet significant typo that can be fixed in seconds: “We would have shunned you, whatever we had found. I love you for yourself, as  Eowyn does too and nothing that could happen to you could ever change that.” Aragorn told him firmly.

I think you might want to add the word "not" into the first sentence.

Faramir was very brave in admitting his fears, and Aragorn was very kind to him about it. Finally, they're showing a little of the wisdom and sense that will eventually make them the greatest leaders of the post-War world. It'll be interesting to see what the Vulcan Mind Me -- excuse me, Thought Bonding will tell them. It'll probably reveal something of Aragorn's past to Faramir. That would probably help humanize the King in the Steward's eyes, which can only help their relationship.

Author Reply: Thank you so much for your much appreciated review and for pointing out the typo which I've fixed now.It did rather change the whole story ! I was tearing my hair out as Word is not working.

I did indeed draw inspiration from Star Trek combined with the spontaneous telepathy that often happens with close family and friends for this part of the story. You guess correctly what it will reveal !
