How bittersweet! I love your stories about young!Frodo and wee!Merry and this one, like many others, had me in tears. And Poor Merimac with Berilac emberassing him so. :) Author Reply: Aww...(hands you virtual hankie) I am very fond of them myself, and always find them a little bittersweet, when we know what their future holds and how they will one day be torn asunder. Yes, poor Merimac! I am certain that Beri would not have been the first five-year-old to do that! LOL!

Awww! *tear* Poor Merry. No matter how much he knows things can never be different and no matter how much he doesn't regret anything he's done, there will always be that part of him that misses Frodo. Wee!Merry being so excited about both receiving real presents and getting to give real presents just put a grin on my face, and the mention of Berry trying to *keep* his presents made me laugh out loud. Just like a kid. Author Reply: I agree. Frodo's leaving left a huge hole in the lives of the other three that would never be filled up, especially for Merry, whose relationship with Frodo went back to his own infancy. I do not think he necessarily loved Frodo any *more* than Pippin or Sam did, but he had loved him a lot longer. I really love to write wee!Merry--he's such a darling! And the idea of presents is dear to the hearts of hobbits of any age, much less a little one of only five. Yes, well I would think it might be hard to get the tiny ones to understand the giving away part every now and then, LOL!

*sniff* It makes me think of things from my own earliest years that can never be again, and how though I hate the changes that have come, I wouldn't change one thing about those glorious, glorious times with my own dearest cousin, except the silly quarrels we had. Merry scooted towards the head of the bed, away from the wriggling fingers. “Presents! Presentspresentspresents! *Real* ones! I won’t be a faunt no more!” “ ‘Any’ more!” Frodo corrected. “And yes--real presents for you today, and you will get to pick out real presents to give tomorrow! Not just flowers for your Mum." Awww...so cute! In the nursery, Dahlia was hard put to it to get the wriggling child into his clothes for the day. “Dahlia!” he kept saying “I’m not going to be a faunt no--I mean *any* more!” “I know Master Merry. Now turn around and put your arm in the sleeve.” “I’m going to get *you* a present!” “That’s nice Master Merry, sit still while I do up your buttons.” “Do you want to guess what it is?” “No, Master Merry, I’d rather be surprised. Now here, let me brush up your toes…” LOL! Good luck, Dahlia! :) “*Now* I’ll open the *best* one!” said Merry, who had been quiet during this exchange. He wanted very much to make Frodo proud of him by learning his letters. Why, even Berilac had just started to learn his--and he had to learn from his mum, as he had no big brother or sister. But Merry had *Frodo* and that was even better. Frodo laughed. “You don’t know what it is, Merry!” “But it’s from you, so it has to be the best!” he exclaimed. Oh, how very sweet! “What does it say?” he asked, though he thought he already knew. “It says ‘Merry and Frodo’,” was the quiet response. *wipes eyes* God bless, Galadriel Author Reply: Oh. You picked out some of my very own favorite parts to quote back at me! Thank you so much, dear! This is among one of my own favorite stories, and one that I very much enjoyed writing! I do so love showing the fun and love that the two of them had before Frodo moved away!

That was a sweet ficlet! It is so touching to see Merry even now, after all his experiences, going there and reading the old book to himself to held up the memory of the cousin he loved so much and lost too soon! Author Reply: I am so sorry for not responding to this sooner! I just came across this review--I must have missed the notification. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

Ahh. Now all Merry needs is a little Merry to join him and perpetuate the tradition. Such a sweet story - and a good thing that Pippin was there to explain to Estella. Author Reply: I am so sorry I didn't see this review sooner! Yes, a little Merry or a little Perry, LOL! True, Pippin would understand--none better. And Estella would have understood as soon as she heard the explanation!

Aw, so sweet. And yes, I feel thta neither Merry or Pippin would have wished things had been otherwise. I think they would always appreaciate who they became because of the Quest. I'm glad Merry found his book :) Author Reply: They do, very much appreciate what the Quest meant to them, and how they grew because of it. Not that I'm sure they don't sometimes regret a few things--Boromir's death, and Theoden's, Gandalf's leaving, and of course, the cost to Frodo. But I don't think either of them ever grudged the cost to themselves. They became who they became because of it, and they found a new and dear second family among the members of the Fellowship, and other dear friends they met along the way.

This was just so adorably sweet!! It was very good of Pippin to know & understand how meaningful the day before his birthday was to Merry ... & to explain to Estella. How endearingly creative of Frodo to not only write, but also illustrate, the cousins' very own adventure! Of course, their own turned out to be quite different from their imagined one in childhood. I must say I was impressed ... you not only incorporated all of your given elements in the first paragraph, but also most of them in the very same sentence! Author Reply: Well, as understanding as Estella usually is, if she's anything like I was as a newlywed, it would have been hard not to take her husband's wish to be alone personally. But she's really very sensible, so when Pippin explained the significance of the book, she would be fine with it. That is an idea I've had for some time, about the book Frodo made Merry. The bunny was just waiting for the right moment. Well, good to get them out of the way, you know, as soon as possible...

This one has me weeping a bit, Dreamflower. Yes, Frodo would have shared that with Merry for as long as he could, and that the book was found and Merry could use it to remember that special gift, truly a gift of self from Frodo to himself.... Thank you.

oh this is just lovely Dreamflower. And how clever of you to get all the elements in within the first paragraph! Author Reply: Thanks! As soon as I saw the pear tree and the book on the list, it rather wrote itself really, for I'd had the idea for some time that Frodo had once made Merry a special storybook.
