Your description of Penny's vertigo was similar to my own experience on the Leaning Tower in Pisa. It was very disorienting as I walked up the steps, first tilting one way, then another. By the time I stepped out on one of the balconies, I was slightly "off," if you get my meaning. Then, looking down and see the little bit of crumbled marble around me and, well, I backed up until I hit wall, slid down to the floor and hyperventilated for a few minutes, LOL. I recovered after about 15 minutes and made my way to the top just fine, but that first step out and then the feeling that it wasn't as sturdy as it looked from the ground just did me in. :) Anyway, loving this story! Author Reply: Gah, how horrible! I do know what you mean about feeling slightly peculiar and the walk up the thing being disorienting - I had exactly that when I went up it as well. I didn't get true vertigo up there, though. The one time I got horribly freaked out, and much like Penny had to GET OFF THIS THING AS FAST AS POSSIBLE (as it were), was going up the Duomo in Florence. Unlike the Dome of St Paul's (London), where the ledge on the inside of the dome is set into the wall, at the Duomo it's a ledge that sticks out of the wall. All I could think of, like Penny, was how far up I was and how little there was between my feet and thin air. I panicked - didn't even get to the outside - because you had to walk round the inside of the dome to get to the door that led you up and outside and I was just frozen halfway round. Think my friends thought I'd flipped my lid! lol

I’m glad Eleniel and Mireth finally know at least a bit about Penny. They deserve the truth after being so good friends for her, being there every time she needed them. After Lindir knows, I had wondered when she will tell them. Rhimlath seems to be a lot of fun – as long as I don’t have to listen to him. Poor Lindir – but it serves him right! giggles I’d not reached this height at all if I’d tried to get up in a talan, because I feel very unwell if I’m too high up. Can’t look from a balcony or open window from higher than the third floor without feeling very dizzy! shudders

They got stuck in. Frankly I do not understand this statement. It makes no sense to me. Gee, I wish laundry were so communal around here. Sounds fun. I'm with Penny as to exploring. There's always something just around the corner, or down the branch of the path I'm on... It was communal without the 'communal bathing' element. Penny liked it. Sounds wonderful! Something like taking a sauna in the dark with only females, and the only light from the coals on top of the stove, and the moon shimmering on the water of the lake as we raced down the ramp to the water to jump in. (And the males supposedly kept busy elsewhere by the camp director and his wife, just as they organised chores for us females when the males were in the sauna... Not very trusting, the director and his wife. LOL! They didn't have to use the sauna; they had a hot shower for their family's use!) I can understand Penny's reaction to the staircase. I have no problem with heights if there's something solid under me and I have a good grip. I used to do rock climbing with joy, but unfortunately my joints don't support me any more in such endeavours. The grammar gremlin wished to observe that Rimlath has a bit of trouble with commas when he is addressing Pen-ii: "I was just telling Lindir about our itinerary for the day,LadyPen-ii," Rhimlath explained. "You will break your neck at that speed,Lady Pen-ii!" Author Reply: "They got stuck in." Frankly I do not understand this statement. It makes no sense to me. Not sure what you mean here, sorry. Do you mean you have never come across the phrase and it is incomprehensible to you? Or do you mean that you do not understand their enthusiasm for hand washing in a stream? If the former, then 'to get stuck it' means 'to get down to it', only it also implies enthusiasm, more or less 'getting yourself well and truly involved up to your elbows' kind of thing. :-)
