group pouts, thats classic. and don't you just hate when they start to kneal on your body and wrap those little claws around your heart, theres no going back from there. Author Reply: The Gamgee children only use the group pout in emergencies, and this certainly constituted as one! I can just see the Gaffer showing the cat where to knead out all the knots and tender spots! ;) Nibbler certainly knew which family to adopt and how.

whines and wimpers Oh, I want a kitten! I love cats so much, but I've never had one. And Nibbler sounds so adorable! You did a very good job with that, as usual. I always enjoy your stories about the gamgee household. Well, I've got class in a few minutes, so I better get going. Author Reply: We've always had cats and dogs in my house, but it was years before I had a cat of my own. I couldn't imagine not having a cat, and now, the Gamgees couldn't imagine it either. Nibbler worked his way into their hearts and lives so quickly, as kittens are prone to do. Not even the Gaffer was immune to his charms. :) Thanks for reading! One minor note--calico, tortoiseshell, and similarly colored cats are almost all females, as the pattern requires TWO genes to occur, and the genes are on the X chromosome. If Nibbler is indeed a male, then he will have a very odd genetic patter--perhaps two X and one Y chromosomes, and will be sterile. But a wonderful description of the kitten coming into the family and claiming them all, including the irascible Gaffer himself! Lovely! Author Reply: Poor sterile Nibbler. :P Unless, Daisy was wrong. ~_^ Gaffer couldn't have resisted the kitten's charms forever. Sam knew what he was doing when he put the kitten in his father's lap. A very obvious, but effective, trick. And seeing how happy his kids were with it, and how attached Sam and Goldie became in particular, gave him even more reason to let them keep it. Besides, cats do pretty much take care of themselves, a crucial selling point. :) Thanks for reading!

What a lovely story, and the children certainly know how to get round the Gaffer. I love the way they call him 'Gaffy' too. Only one thing surprised me - calico cats are always female. Tortoiseshell males occur very, very rarely, and are always sterile. Although perhaps Middle-earth genetics are different? :-)) Author Reply: I figure that "Gaffer" is equal to "Dad" amongst the working class hobbits, and so the very youngest children would call their fathers "Gaffy" just as much as they would "Daddy". :D 90% of 'calico' cats are female, and the males are indeed sterile. So either the Gamgees have themselves a very rare cat, or Daisy was mistaken. hehe Imagine Gaffer's surprise if that cat turns out to be female and has kittens one day! He did think he was likely to regret his decision to keep it. ~_^ Thanks for reading, and for that plot bunny you unintentionally sent my way. :)

I love the practised pouting. Those kids know how to win over their father. Mind you, I suspect seeing Marigold and Sam happily absorbed in caring for the kitten worked even better. Not to mention Nibbler's skill in coaxing attention from the Gaffer himself. Very sweet! Author Reply: Oh yes, pouting works on even the toughest father's heart. They have their Gaffer wrapped around their little fingers. :) lol, if they had found the owner for that kitten, the Gaffer would have had to go out and find another one. He couldn't really take the kitten away, not after seeing how happy his children were with it, and certainly not after getting a dose of its affections himself. That's a good trick, putting the kitten on his lap. It certainly worked on my dad every time. ^_^ Thanks for reading!

Awww! How cute! I love the image of Gaffer Gamgee with a kitten sprawled on his lap, completely helpless against its charms. I look forward to more of these! God bless, Galadriel Author Reply: No one can resist a kitten, unless they're completely heartless, which the Gaffer certainly is not. And kittens are tenacious. They'll hunt around for attention until they get it, and little Nibbler wasn't about to give up on the Gaffer. I'm glad you've enjoyed these. The children held their breaths and looked up at their father with yearn-filled eyes. “Can we keep it?” May dared to ask. “Please.” And then as one, all four children lowered their heads and peered up at him through their lashes, every one of them pouting. Gaffer sighed, defeated. Awwww!!! Nibbler Gamgee! This is just too adorable for words. And before Hamfast could protest, Sam scooped the little calico up and plopped him onto his father's lap. Nibbler instantly started kneading the Gaffer’s lap, turning its purr up to fill the room again. Hamfast sat stock still, watching the kitten warily, but Nibbler wasn’t having any of that. He had quickly become used to the affectionate attentions of its new siblings, and the kitten wasted no time in nudging its white-and-orange head beneath the Gaffer’s hand and holding it there expectantly. When the Gaffer didn’t move to pet him, Nibbler wriggled his head about, then kneaded the Gaffer’s lap and maneuvered itself until its tiny little body was all but sheltered beneath the Gaffer’s large hand. Then it nipped lightly at a finger and wriggled its head again. Awwww!! melts Author Reply: Sam knew what he was doing when he put Nibbler on the Gaffer's lap. He knew there was no way his father could resist its charms and he was right! I know it always worked on my dad at any rate. And that little trick with the head wriggling is one my cat uses on me all the time, when she feels she's being ignored. :) Thanks for reading!
