Hello! Found this via Marigold's Recs page. :-) This was absolutely adorable! I loved Merry's thoughts - obviously Frodo would never give him his cold! Silly Dahlia. And I loved that he displays the stubborn, yet clever mind that he will retain through his adulthood. Very nice. :-D Author Reply: Hello! I'm always happy to hear from someone new! Marigold is lovely, isn't she? I am glad you liked this. Merry, of course, knows Frodo would never do anything harmful to him--like give him a cold! I like to think that even at their earliest ages, the seeds of who they would eventually become were already planted in our four lads. I really love to write about Frodo's time at Brandy Hall when Merry was little, and have several such stories. Thank you for stopping by to read and review!

So adorable. SO adorable. My favorite bits: He lay next to his cousin, softly combing his little fingers through the dark curls. When he saw his mother, his eyes widened and he sat up. awwww just awww- inducing. :D He needed to see Frodo. If Frodo was sick that meant he felt bad. And when Frodo felt bad it was Merry’s job to cheer him up. Why was Dahlia being so silly about all this? Merry is so cute at this age...indeed his determination is one trait we see again during the Quest... awww what loving relationship you have between them. :D And it was so cute that Dahlia got fooled and that Merry faked his sleep. lol Very cute story. :D Author Reply: Merry really is a very cute faunt. But the seeds of his future personality--that fierce loyalty and devotion to Frodo, and that drive and determination that led him on--were already there! Poor Dahlia! In a battle of wits with a stubborn little Merry, she was bound to lose, if for no other reason than his unceasing persistance, LOL!

Bless the persistent and clever little bairn! I can see it now, and the love expressed. Author Reply: "Persistent and clever"; that's our Merry, and I like to think he was like that from the start. And he did love his big brother/cousin so very much!

I'm glad Esmeralda reacted with resignation. There was no way that they were going to be able to keep that devious little Brandybuck away without locking him in his room! And even then he would climb out of the window. The bolster! He'll not get away with that trick so easily again. And Dahlia will sit with her back to the closed door. Lovely tale. Author Reply: No, I don't think they stood much chance of it. I would imagine that after this, unless whatever contagious thing one of them had was truly dangerously dire (and that doesn't come up for *my* Frodo and Merry) then they would have just given up the effort to keep them apart. And, no, Dahlia will not be taken in by a bolster again, LOL! (And I love that image of her sitting against the door. *snigger*)

This was utterly adorable! I love Merry's logic, that Frodo wouldn't make him sick! Merry sounds like a real handful - perhaps once Pip arrives he realises what Dahlia went through? :-)) Author Reply: Well, of course it was logical. Merry *knew* Frodo wouldn't do anything to harm him--and he turned out to be right. It's a good thing he's still too young for "I told you so"! Oh, Pip gave Merry some hairy moments as well, I am *quite* sure!

Clever Merry! A very sweet story! Author Reply: Thanks! Merry just is ever so clever, isn't he? *grin*

Of course he didn't get Frodo's cold. Frodo would never do that to him. ^_^ Adorable little story. Merry's persistance and clever, quick planning really shine through here. Author Reply: Absolutely. Merry *knew* that, and he couldn't understand why his Mum and Dahlia did not. "Persistant and clever"--yep, that's our Merry!

Oh, that is so cute! Of course the adults fought a lost battle to keep Merry from his Frodo, the more so because Frodo was sick. Merry had to go and comfort ‚his’ Frodo, how could they not understand this? And of course Merry wouldn’t catch the cold, Frodo wouldn’t do this to him *LOL* I love this argument! For someone so little it was a very cunning idea to use the bolster to fool Dahlia. Clever little lad! He must truly have been the terror of Buckland when he was older! Author Reply: Naturally. Keeping Merry apart from Frodo when he was truly determined would be a lost cause, and Dahlia and Esmeralda should have known that from the start, LOL! Well, Merry knows Frodo wouldn't do anything bad to him, so the argument made perfect sense to him! My Merry is very precocious. If he were a modern human child, he'd be in what they call "gifted" classes at school. He's clever and a quick learner, and he is always planning ahead. Poor Dahlia didn't stand a chance.

Bravo!! Charming!! Well Done :) :) :) I love the description of the toy pony :) Author Reply: Thank you! I just thought Merry might like a toy such as that: very realistic, and not necessarily cuddly. And Merry's always liked ponies.

I am glad that no-one is the worse for Merry winning this tussle. Dahlia really did try so hard! *g* Author Reply: She did. She really did; but trying to come between Merry and Frodo was doomed to be a losing battle.
