Letters From Faramir  by Agape4Gondor 1 Review(s)
FimbrethilReviewed Chapter: 8 on 8/20/2025
I thought I’d lost you at that time, the night was black; the river was freezing. I barely made it to the other side, but you were in your heavy armor. At last, after what seemed hours, I found you, laughing at the look on my face. You are impossible. I almost think you remained hidden to tease me. Almost.
[Heehee it’s the Rusty Armor Joke! I think the first time my sister and I watched the films, after reading the film guide, oh, it was because the caption of the picture was like “Boromir and Faramir after the Escape from Osgiliath”. But I compared Boromir in his full metal armor, to Faramir in what looks more like a leather jerkin. And besides the fact of how did Boromir swim in it, how did it not get rusty? And Faramir isn’t wearing metal, so his armor couldn’t rust. (I guess I didn’t consider that water can wear at leather). But then since their armor is different, someone said maybe Denethor gave Boromir new armor, but he didn’t give any to Faramir. So maybe Boromir receives new armor any tine he needs it, but Faramir has to sew his own…or something. Related to that is maybe the armor Boromir is wearing isn’t rusty because he took it off and left it in Osgiliath, and afterwards donned new armor. But how would he have time to do that? Same thing with Faramir.] [[The other thing about that picture is that I think it is one of the only ones where they are both in a happy time and you can see them, their armor, and their hair, straight on. i.e. When someone thinks of a picture of them they usually think of that one.]]

Ah, Boromir, even at this hour, as all hope would drain from me, I cannot lose hope. Our men make my heart swell with pride. No people seem greater to me at this moment than those assembled here with me. Not even the kings of old. I see the strain on their faces, the weariness in their limbs, yet I have only to walk by and their heads raise up and they nod and smile at me and I see their quality. I can feel their trust, Boromir, and I would not fail them. You did not tell me of this part of leadership, Brother, the crushing weight of responsibility, the untoward love for our men and the knowledge that they go to their deaths at my command. At least they know that I will join them. [Wow. Yes, they have quality too.]

I guess I was too early with my cheers. (Though they deserved them then—well, Imrahil didn’t do anything). But now! Faramir gets to live 90-100 more years, (I think.) And he has reason to live: Aragorn, Éowyn, Restoration, Establishing the Kingship of the Reunited Kingdom…Pippin & Beregond (and Bergil)…
