To lose a wife at the birth of a child was not that unusual a situation, unfortunately. May Denethor find some tenderness as he grows, though. Author Reply: Ah Larner - welcome to the world of Denethor. As one of my favorite authors, I am so excited that you decided to read this. And comment! I'm really wondering though, if death in childbirth was a common thing in Gondor. Their skills in medicine seem to have still been pretty good, even so long after the fall of Numenor. Just a thought. Thank you. I do so hope you will enjoy it. And then mourn with me the loss of this great man.

Well, I have just discovered this story, and so I am way behind, but really looking forward to finding time to settle in and follow along! A wonderfully compelling first chapter; great character development and a very keen emotional arc. I like your Ecthelion, and I feel for little Denethor, who seems to have been born under a black cloud. I am looking forward to learning more about the family and the city, which you have captured here in elegant shades of grey. I shall return! :) Author Reply: Oh thank you ever so much, Elanor. I have often thought to go back and re-write chatper one. I have wondered if it carried the sense of foreboding that is synonymous with the Stewards. The tale will probably take another year to write. I've been at it since the day after the last movie, ROTK, came out - it is my 'slashing back' at PJ for his horrid depiction of Denethor. Not at all Tolkienesque! IMHO. Again - many, many thanks for your kind and heartening words!!!

Beautiful emotions here, Agape. The loss of Rian so soon after the birth of the child would have been devastating, particularly in light of her words of concern regarding Denethor. Author Reply: Larner! Bless you - Gondor's history is long and convoluted. When the last of the Stewards came into power (namely, Turgon, Ecthelion and Denethor), the Watchful Peace was over and Sauron had (in TA 2951) taken over Barad-dur. Hard times for all concerned. And Rian, I decided, had foresight. She was definitely concerned. I am most grateful for your review!

A striking first chapter, with excellent juxtaposition of joy and tragedy. Poor Ecthelion. Author Reply: Thanks for the note regarding the justaposition... I am glad you are feeling sorry for Ecthelion here... life twists Gondorian Stewards... unfortunately! Agape

Ooh, I like this beginning. It's such a quick reversal, but it flows so nicely. On to the next chapter.
