| What a ceremony for so small a child--and such a responsibility! To be forbidden to seek the comfort of his sisters so as to force him to maturity? At least he's heard of Hobbits and trolls! Poor lad! Love his impression of Fengel. As for Saruman.... Author Reply: Thanks Larner - it was an extreme way to handle the situation, but Ecthelion had no 'gentling' hand to guide him. Indis and Almiel were too young to 'fight' for their brother. As for Saruman.... there is worse in store for young Denethor. | |

| Well, we can see where some of Denethor's future ideas about parenting independant-minded sons came from - though banishing a motherles six-year-old boy from the comfort of his sisters is a bit much. Could you put the chapter numbers/title above the chapter (i.e. where we read the actual chapter) as well as the chapter index, so, as we're reading it, we can quickly reference what year it is, and which chapter if we want to go back to it after reading another chapter? Author Reply: Hi, Raksha, I debated about the severity of banishment, but eventually saw that, though it seemed banishment to the child, he was only one level away from his family. Too young to trust that he was not alone. And that was the banishment. The mental/emotional one - not the physical. I changed the chapter #'s - hope this works better for you. | Ah, and Ecthelion contributes to Denethor's affection problems later in life. He's hurting the girls as much as Denethor with this little toughening exercise, but he doesn't see the need to deal with that. One gets the feeling that no one really cares about these girls, since they seem to get shunted off to dark corners all the time. What a big ceremony for such a little boy. He probably didn't understand a word of what he was promising, but he'll keep those oaths anyway. Author Reply: Thanks for your comments. I have found that Ecthelion's treatment creates two different women - you will see yourself later on... it is interesting the choices that we make... it happens in most families - one child treated the same way grows up totally different from the other.
