Pitfalls of the Palantir  by Haleth 3 Review(s)

So Inglor is still being 'protected' from this terrible harpy!!! What is the mystery surrounding Haleth and Rivendell? WHEN did Inglor fish her out of the Long Lake?WHY does Elladan distrust her so? oh- just questions and more frustrating questions!! Haleth missed her great chance didnt she - I assume there are many more missed opportunites to come. Saeros is lovley- like him. More please- It might be interesting to see how Inglor would react if Saeros made a bit of a fuss of HAleth.... And I love the way the dwarves are spending too much playing witht he palantir - I can just imagine the tricks they might get up to.

It's Haleth's impression that Inglor is being protected from her. She's over-sensitive about Inglor and it's probably colouring her perception. She's likely over-reacting to Elladan and the separation from Inglor, but she hasn't discussed it with anyone and no one has explained the situation to her. She's just jumping to her own conclusions based on incomplete information.

WHEN did Inglor fish her out of the Long Lake?

That story is actually written but it needs a beta reader to pick it apart before I'm willing to make it public.

Poor Haleth. A chance comes along and she doesn't know what to do with it.

And whatever you're thinking about the dwarves and the palantir? You're probably right.

Thanks again for reviewing.

Oh! The palantir had its own history -and cache memory, and delete option! -Féanor was a genius indeed!

And I loved the fhought of the poor foreman just figuring out how to erase the traces of improper use before returning it! I'm still howling!!!

The palantir does have a memory cache. I took the idea from the chapter The Palantiri in Unfinished Tales.

This most likely wasn't what Tolkien had in mind when he described how the palantiri worked, though.

I do like the thought of the Palantir becoming a bit of a liability. Very practical dwarf, that Frar. Give the problem to someone else. Quickly.

Author Reply: Thank-you, Bodkin.

The palantiri were powerful artifacts and could be very useful. However, there is always a danger of a powerful artifact being misused. It could also attract the attention of powerful people who would like the chance to misuse it. Or powerful people who think it's theirs and want it back.

There wasn't much else Frar could do with the palantir. He couldn't keep it; it was disrupting the work. If the King of Gondor somehow learnd that the dwarves had a palantir, he would want it back. Frar could have sent it directly to Aragorn, but he would have risked Thorin II's disapproval for simply giving away a Seeing Stone.

So Frar is happy, but it has complicated things for Inglor and Haleth.

Thanks again.
