Sigh - this made me tear up (leading to very strange looks from my colleagues). The first line really hit me, "It was found, stored in the bottom of a chest, under a well worn cloak that had somehow withstood the turning of the ages." - somehow more than the letter itself. The letter was sad, mixed in with understandable anger, and a little bittersweet humour as Sam wonders about his 'station'. But ... the first line - the fact that so much time has passed without a clear indication whether this hurt ever healed, or if Sam ever became whole again - really hit me. I hope he did but I applaud your courage in not giving the reader a clear happy ending. Plus, the fact that it was in the chest suggested to me that the letter was never send. Perhaps it was one of Sam's decendents who found it. Such words, which will never be seen by the intended recipient - such is life I guess. Sometimes you just don't get the opportunity to say all you want, to those you want. :'(

well, that was fairly gut-wrenching! But in a good way, I assure you. That was such a heartfelt piece of writing, I really felt Sam's pain. And I love how honest you had him, honest enough to say things he feels he shouldn't, honest enough to say things that might hurt or offend. He says them because he knows he should, because he must. Because he's Sam. Yes, I love that Sam! Couldja tell? ;-) well done.

Oh, poor Sam! *sob* Very real emotions, though.

Anger can so easily be a part of grief, and certainly Sam has reason to know grief.

Ahh, I really like how you write your stories. The sweet-sad simple-complicated sort of writting that leaves a reader with a satsfied smile, (and maybe a tear or two)atleast the stories of yours that I have read so far. I have to check out some of your other stories now. Namarie! God bless, Arwen
