A Shire Sketchbook  by Baggins Babe 9 Review(s)

It’s so wonderful to have Frodo there and able to see the children of his cousins and friend growing up! *sighs contentedly*

Had to giggle about Sara and his old pouch and jacket, because I know the feeling. If I love something, I’m loath to part with it, too ;-)

It’s good to know Frodo can enjoy all these lasses wearing his mother’s jewellery instead of seeing it as a sad reminder of her death.

Author Reply: Like most husbands, Sara is reluctant to part with his favourite jacket and old tobacco pouch - and like wives everywhere Esme tries to sneak the tatty old things out when he isn't looking!

I'm sure Frodo can now look at the jewellery and be pleased to see it decorating a new generation of lasses. The pain of his loss is tempered now by the joy of their memory and the knowledge that he will see them again.

I know I'm late to review, as one of those who'd requested this of you. I loved this companion piece from begining to end.

"In allowing himself to finally let go, he felt closer to his parents than before. These cherished pieces would live on, and with them the memory of those who had been so cruelly torn from life."

Those lines are so poignant & so very true & meaningful--they are my favorites of this piece. This is such a lovely tale & I'm so glad to see that you wrote it! Thank you!

Author Reply: It was your bunny which helped to bring this sequel about and I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!

Lovely! You really capture the "big family" atmosphere here. And I love the part about the old pouch and jacket! LOL!
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: I'm pleased I managed to convey the right atmosphere. And I think Saradoc is like most men - hangs on to a motheaten old jacket despite Esme's efforts to get rid of it!

Thank you for reviewing - still awaiting your opinion of 'Birthday Surprises'!

Ah a deep and very satisfied sigh comes from reading this BB. Lovely.

Author Reply: That's what I like to read! Thank you.

Such a warm, loving little chapter. The kind of loving picture we all would have liked to see if our good professor could have written a hapy ending.

Author Reply: Nothing like good old hobbit fluff for making us feel warm and fuzzy! It would have been nice if this was how it could have happened.

Yes, the letting go is right, which in part is why I have Frodo leaving most of his mother's jewelry to Narcissa, knowing in her turn she'll give it to Forsythia and whatever daughters Narcissa and Brendi might have.

Author Reply: Letting go is often the most difficult thing to do, but the most rewarding. A part of the healing process.

How beautiful, B.B. :) Yes, beautiful things should be worn and used, not hiden away. Thank yor for a sweet story.

Author Reply: Thank you. I think Frodo was such a generous soul he would have been delighted to see the jewellery being worn and enjoyed.

Absolutely delightful, BB, just like all the "Reunion-verse"! This one in particular hits just the right note--not at all silly or funny, but simply very full of fond affection and hobbity ways! It always gives me a little lump in the throat to think of Frodo settled and happy living out his days among his dear ones, and able to appreciate the love and honor that are due to him! Thank you so much for sharing that Frodo with us!

Author Reply: What a lovely thing to say! Yes, I wish it could have been this way, and I love this opportunity to be able to share it with you all!

I think there would have been this natural banter between the cousins - gentle teasing which masks the deep affection they feel for each other.

What a lovely event. I can just imagine the hobbit lasses dancing, all wearing their sparkling new jewelry. Such love!

And I adore this idea: "...the new combined Shirriff, Bounder and Ranger Post..." Marvelous.

Author Reply: I like to think there would have been a lot of co-operation between the various Free Peoples. I like to think of the Rangers and hobbits sharing facilities - esp. the kitchens - and eating together.

I too could see all those lasses with their jewellery.
