Damnit! There I was, so eager to read it all, that I missed out a chapter. *headdesk* Typical. Now can barely remember what happened, because omg short term memory loss. Oh yes. Legolas. *sob* You write his affliction so well, moreso because it is seen primarily through the eyes of Gimli. I like how it is Eomer, though, who gives Legolas a task to do; it could be unwitting, or it could speak of personal experience at needing to distract oneself from inner pain. Of course, how could I not love Gimli's rather dwarvish method of distracting Legolas through the morning? Where words fail, then obviously a direct assault is the next logical step. ^_^ Besides, you're so very good at battle scenes, and having one thrown unexpectedly into the mix spices up the beginning of the story. Pity the poor guard, though. As for Imrahil, I like his uncertainty, and the vague foreshadowing (such a cool word) about what will happen later (particularly to Legolas). And again, Aragorn is entirely in command of all that are with him; I never noticed it the first time, but with hindsight, it is blindingly obvious that Eomer is rather like a puppy in training, following loyally at his master's heels. And though Aragorn gives him opportunities to make his own decisions, he himself expedcts - subconsciously, mostly - for Eomer to agree. Author Reply: Eomer is very much out of his league here, and at first, he's content to let Aragorn handle things. Aragorn knows a bit about what is happening, and that's good enough for Eomer. But after a while, when Eomer feels he knows more of what to expect, he begins striking out on his own. At least, that's the way things were supposed to work. I'm very glad you like the sea-longing. I was working blind here because I didn't have a very clear picture of what it was I was portraying. I thought I knew, but having read other interpretations since then, I've done quite a bit of refining on this concept. Still, I'm glad to know that the original still meshes with what happens later on. And yes, I pity the guard, too. ;) | |
