| Ecthelion is such I want to wring his neck myself. The man is so blasted contrary and antagonistic when he ought to be supportive and positive. WHEN he does the right thing, he does it for the wrong reason. And to blame Denethor for Thorongil having left? Is this man also using the Palantir of Minas Anor, and the stone twisted long before Denethor also began to use it? | |

| Ah, Ecthelion, the opera-villain-cum-Steward-of-Gondor. Finally, reality catches up to him, and he allows Denethor to become Captain General. Well, he's on his way out, so he'll get his. Finduilas really is wilting here. I'm surprised that she managed to bear both Boromir and Faramir, frail as she is. Author Reply: Hello French Pony, I really do believe Finduilas must have been frail from the beginning. Frail not in body, but in spirit. Eventually, that fraility spread and she succumbed. How sad to leave two boys behind in that atmosphere - not only a father who was responsible for the whole of Middle-earth (in his eyes), but also knowing that evil was heeded her sons way. Denethor, from what Tolkien writes, knew that the day of reckoning was in his time. She must have sensed it - or he could even have spoken of it often in front of her. Sad! As for Ecthelion - he made a huge mistake with Thorongil and Mithrandir - botched it very badly - He should have been a true father AND diplomat and helped his son accept the help that was offered Gondor. Another sad thing! | |
