When I read this for the first time, I wasn't all that familiar with The Silmarillion (still am not, but at least know more about Numenor), so it was a huge shock when you divulged the Secret of the Hawk. Of course, now I find the little details exceedingly cool (still having no idea if they're lifted from Silm. or if you made them up). Also loving Gimli's 'diplomacy' in this chapter. He's such a little warlord, bless him. A complete contrast to Legolas' forced detachment from the battle, which further emphasises just how different they are. I like how you add little things like that in, expanding their characters in relation to each other so that they compliment one another nicely. As for the attack - as ever, it rocks. You write battles in a clear, logical way, but somehow I still get the sense of confusion that suffuses any fight. And it's very cool how the different characters still carry on talking to each other while taking out all their foes. Just another day at the office, and all that. Okay, that's it for today. Am very tired. 7 down, 30 to go. Couldn't have made it a SHORT story, could you. No. :P Author Reply: Concerning the hawk and related Silmarillion things, I made them up. The details seemed appropriate to me, though, especially since the Black Numenoreans were so very intent on going against Gondor after the fall of Numenor. And Gondor's symbol was the White Tree. But none of it could be considered canon. I'm very glad you liked the attack in the desert. There was a lot of talking going on (perhaps too much) but I hoped it felt somewhat chaotic and rushed. But these are experienced warriors who are used to conversing during battles, especially since some of them fought in small groups that would need massive coordination against larger forces. So they were probably used to talking. Anyway, thank you VERY much for all the reviews you've done so far. It means quite a lot to me, and I'm very fortunate that there are people out there like you! | |
