Pitfalls of the Palantir  by Haleth 8 Review(s)

once again, we get so little, but, at the same time, so much. I really love Inglor & his supposed lack of knowledge as to why he has the effect that he does. As for Haleth's reaction to Beregnil, it IS good to be noticed once in a while by a male figure that isn't the object of your affection. All in all, another great chapter, leaving us dying for more......

Author Reply: Thank-you, Vampfan.

Poor Inglor. He likely doesn't understand why he affects women the way he does. It's fairly obvious that nothing like it has happened to him until now and he's not a young individual.

Beregnil's inclusion of Haleth is refreshing change. Though she at least understands why people speak to Inglor and ignore her, it's got to be depressing to be constantly ignored.

More will come soon.

Thanks again.

Poor Haleth. Confusion doesn't suit her. Although watching 'the muscles in his back moving beneath his shirt as he worked' doesn't sound such a bad way to spend the afternoon.

Female heads were already snapping around to gaze upon the splendour that was Inglor. I love statements like that. So well put.

And someone who sees Haleth and talks to her! A remarkable man!

Author Reply: Thank-you, Bodkin.

You're right. Haleth does not appreciate confusion in the least. She usually puts it out of her mind with physical activity. As that outlet isn't currently available (she's wisaly not ready to challenge Inglor just yet), there is a lot of free time to be confused.

There's not much that gets past Beregnil. Anyone who rises to the position he's in has to be very sharp as well as charming.

Thanks again

Oh! yay! Finally on the road! well, from one prison to another, it seems, although at least this time Inglor is confined within the same walls, and he will have a taste of a stern housekeeper! Is there a cat in Lake Town's master's house?

I like this Beregnil, who courteously included poor Haleth in his greting *and* in the conversation! Poor woman surely began to wonder whether she had become a Nazgul herself, and with a ring, too!

I liked the description of the hustle and bustle in Lake Town, and the vivid picture of the Masterīs working room...and... of Inglor paddling, too, LOL!

Oh, And many thanks for the tips! Let us hope she behaves here :-)

Poor Inglor, kept inside and out of sight for his own good. He knows how people (especially women) react to him but he still can't understand why.

I'm very glad you like Beregnil. He's quite sharp, quite the gentleman and one of my favourite original characters.

Tolkien's description of Lake Town has always fascinated me. He hinted that it was a commercial town in the Hobbit. The town elected its Master rather than having a hereditary ruler. While the hobbits elect their mayor, most of the western human settlements are kingdoms. I hope I've hit fairly close to the mark with my description of it.

Thanks again!

I check this site everyday for an update. That's how much I love this story. Excellent characters and story line! The elves act like elves, the men act like men, and this thing with the silver ring is driving me to distraction!

Author Reply: Thank-you, Blackadder, especially for the comment about the elves acting like elves. It's always a temptation to have Inglor behave like a mortal. I constantly have to keep in mind the fact that while elves look like humans and act like humans, they are definitely not humans. A lot of the tension comes from Inglor and especially Haleth making incorrect assumptions about each other's words and behavior.

Lovely! Just lovely! I was so happy you were able to update!

Author Reply: Thank-you, Lyn.

And thank you for reading carefully enough to point out the grammatical and spelling errors. I try my best to catch them before posting, but some always slip through.

Hooray, more! I like Beregnil very much. He seems like a clever, kind man. And poor Haleth, watching Inglor's shoulders and being all uncertain about the ring.

I also have been meaning to ask (though I'm not sure if you'll tell me, because you're enigmatic as Inglor, according to the answers you leave on reviews) what the hangover remedy Inglor gave Haleth way back in Bree was? I assume he didn't make a mistake, but why did he give her something ineffective? It puzzles me like a very puzzling thing.

Author Reply: Thank-you again, Mopsy. (I love your name.)

I'm glad you mentioned liking Beregnil. I like him very much. He wasn't planned at all. It almost seemed as though he was there all along, patiently waiting for the story to get to him.

About the hangover remedy that wasn't. Inglor was quite alarmed by the original loss of the palantir. Not knowing much about mortal society, he really needed Haleth to be able to think straight. The other symptoms of the hangover weren't as important as her having a clear mind. Whatever he gave her allowed her to concentrate while she had a headache. Maybe it was a few drops from the long vanished waters of Ivrin? That water was rumoured to be able to clear the mind.

How he got hold of such a thing is another matter entirely. I think I feel a plot bunny nibbling on my ankles.

Thanks!

Yippie (does little happy dance)!! Another TWO chapters. Liuth???? I better go back and re-read. Inglor MADE Haleth's ring..hmmm....definately sounds like an elven bethrothal (sp) ring. No wonder she is feeling like she was part of something but can't figure out what or why. Definatley looking forward to more Haleth and Inglor. Please keep writing I love this story.

Author Reply: Thanks Kathy_SSF. I'm glad you're still enjoying the story. Originally it wasn't meant to be this long. It just grew out of control.

Inglor made Haleth's ring. He did not bother to tell her what it was for. Either he assumed she would know (never a good idea) or he doesn't want her to know.

Thank-you again.

So it is indeed a silver ring Inglor gave Haleth, I can't wait to see just what he is thinking about.
The Hosluin have left Lake town as well, not surprising. I wonder how much work it will take Inglor and Haleth to get anywhere near the palantir. Those easterlings seem to have plans withit, and they aparantly know what it is they have gotten hold of.
I can't help but agree with Haleth and find it funny how women react to Inglor ;) somehow I think it's just a natural reaction of them to any elf.

Author Reply: Thank-you, Fire.

It will likely take quite a bit of work before Inglor and Haleth get past the Hosluin. This is assuming the dwarves, Dunedain or dragon don't beat them to it.

It's interesting to watch people react to very good looking individuals. They don't usually go to the extremes the way women seem to with Inglor (unless it's a movie star), but there's a definite difference in the way they behave.

Thanks again.
