| I continue to love your or rather Bill's names for the Hobbits. Poor Pippin, no longer "Apples and Mischief" but rather "marsh-stinking" MM. Author Reply: Hello! This is a flying visit as I take a quick break to brew a mug of tea, and I must get right back to work, but I just wanted to say that I read both your new drabble and the latest chapter of the romance earlier and loved them! Unfortunately, I was outside on the patio on my phone at the time, and my phone would not let me save a review for either... I will have to go back and review later, when I am not on a work deadline! | Hello Lindelea, The uphill/downhill debate Bill is having with himself is great. And his dithering between how to refer to Pippin is amusing without end! A very observant fellow he is too - pity he can't talk to the others and give them his opinion, it seems only fair, poor sod ;) Kara's Aunty. Author Reply: We've used the same psychology when on Volkswalks with the wee hobbits, welcoming uphill stretches for the sake of the downhill to follow. Sometimes it works, sometimes it backfires (a long downhill has them groaning, thinking of the uphill stretch we'll have to climb to get back to the finish). Poor Bill, he can all but talk. | |

| Poor Bill--no idea yet, poor lad, what's coming in store next! I expect he'd bolt right away if he knew! Yet he's definitely caught the unease--very well done! I'm so glad you have been able to snatch a few minutes for writing, and I hope your little one is soon on the mend! Author Reply: Poor Bill. | Young marsh-stinking hobbit! What a great description. Bill has definitely noticed that, in Sam, he has acquired the very prince of carers. One who will put himself forward without hesitation when it is a matter of looking after Bill. And we have a very bright pony here. Author Reply: I agree with you, very bright pony! Bill's probably the sort who, with a safe and gentle home, would learn all sorts of tricks, such as opening the latch to his stall. I sort of see him in the light of a would-be Merrylegs, in Black Beauty. Now there was a pony with personality... | |

| Bill does well with the journey now, and love how he shifts identifying features for Pippin as Pippin no longer smells of apples and mischief but the marshes they just traversed. And love the realization of the smell of uncertainty, much of it probably from Strider himself. Will be your way Sunday evening and will leave for back here probably late Thursday, as I have to work Friday. Author Reply: Hmmm. I wonder what Pippin will smell like at Rivendell? | |
