| Oy! I had a sinking feeling in my gut the whole time I was reading this! I'm still hoping that something else will stay Beregond's execution (we know from reading the books that it does, but as they say, the tale is in the telling). Another excellent chapter. :-) Pippinfan | |

| Darn it, Lin, you made me cry AGAIN! Beregond's toasts, especially to Pippin, and Pip's comments back caught me by surprise and brought quick tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat. And then his cheerful comment about being called to muster... that was a MEAN thing to do to Merry! Poor hobbit, thinking he was going off to the execution of one with whom he'd just been eating and drinking. Odd habits indeed. And on a side note, interesting to think that Beregond had not been restrained or imprisoned at all, but was simply expected to wait honorably (and apparently patiently) for his execution. At least the tears at the end of the chapter were happy ones. | |

| This is going to make Merry ill if they're not careful. He appears to be suffering more than Beregond. Still, nice, when you think you're off to an execution, to find that you're about to be knighted for your efforts. And using Merry as the tailor's dummy was probably a good move. He is dandy enough to be able to keep still, whereas I imagine that Pippin, even at the best of times, is as twitchy as a hobbit on an ants' nest. Author Reply: Ah, yes, Merry... He probably is suffering more than Beregond, considering that Beregond has had some time to come to terms with his fate, and that he knew what the consequences were, even before making the decision to leave his post in time of battle. | Oh my god! Such a tension! Surely, Merry will be most glad to see that his suspicions were wrong. But in his eyes they are only delayed. For what time he does not know. Poor Merry! I wonder if Aragorn has had a word with Beregond yet. Wow! He really impressed me in this chapter. I don't find any better words, so I'd like to quote Shirebound: "grace and nobility" - that's it! Pippin, however, oblivious to the tragic secret Merry and Beregond share, had a great time that day, and well-deserved, I'd say. 'and now let us drink to the start of a new age, but let us never forget the friendships of the old one.' Well said, indeed! Author Reply: Poor Merry. I know in my head that Aragorn interviews Beregond and everyone who has had anything to do with Beregond. (The man is amazing, truly amazing, directing the affairs of a combined army, mopping up after major decisive battle, healing various and sundry ills, and still finding time to investigate this difficult case. Does he never sleep? LOL. But I do see him as diligent in this case, and the way I've written this story elsewhere, his hands are tied by law and tradition, and he's trying to find a way out for Beregond without compromising the man's honour.) | A grief that Merry has anticipated so long what did not come that day, and that he must hide such from Pippin. That Beregond gave thanks Pippin had saved his life in the toast must have been almost more than Merry could have borne, as well as appearing most ironic in nature. But I rejoice that the honors given here were given as they were. And an officer's uniform? Of course, you fool of a Took! Author Reply: *slaps self on forehead* Do you know, I completely missed the irony of that moment, until you mentioned it! I did, and here I pride myself on deliberate (but subtle, LOL) irony in so much of what I write. | |

| Huzzah!! Huzzah!! Huzzah!! Though this only puts off what Merry is dreading. Bless his dear heart, he's carrying a lot of grief, for Beregond and for Pip. Boots for a Hobbit? How absurd! LOL Author Reply: LOL! Well, I guess the Bucklanders sometimes wore boots, but boots still don't sound very hobbity to me! Poor Merry, the weight of the world is on his shoulders. Good thing we know the outcome! | |

| I can 'see' all this so perfectly, Lindelea because of your writing. And you write Beregond with such grace and nobility, we can't help but love him. Author Reply: Ah, thank you! I have been very fond of Beregond since I first read his meeting with Pippin. Such a bright, inquiring spirit, curious and imaginative, juxtaposed against Denethor's dark moodiness. Such fierce loyalty and love for his Captain! And as he must have known the penalty for what he did, even as he made the agonising decision to leave his post, then what fortitude he showed, leading a company of Men to the Black Gate... I suppose it is no wonder that embroidering on the bare facts of Beregond's story is what pulled me into fanfic in the first place. | |
