Fairy Tales of Middle-Earth  by DrummerWench 11 Review(s)

Oh, this was very good and very much in the tradition of classical fairy tales.
If there's a moral in this tale, I would suppose it would be not to count your blessings. How sad to think of the prince constantly searching for a way back into the golden woods and never finding it.

Author Reply: Thank you, earthdragon! I'm so glad you liked it! Yes, this one is rather sad; many real-world fairy tales have sad or tragic endings. If there are morals (I don't intentionally write morals), one of them is a pretty common one: Actions have consequences.

Again, thank you for commenting!

Poor thing. He was caught in the web of Gladriel's beauty just as Gimli was. If only he had listen to the warning of the elves before leaving the woods. I think I would have stayed, but who knows?

And this is why it is so dangerous for mortals to seek the company of the elves and to enter the Golden Wood.

It seems to me that you are unveiling the subconscious substance of Tolkien's tale. Not that we did not know, but it is one thing to "know" it and other, much more enjoyable, to experience it in such a perfect way. Congratulations again, I am enjoying myself thoroughly with this treat.

Author Reply: Now I'm blushing, perelleth. I feel I've been handed a big bouquet of flowers!

Yes, the halls of Lorien are timeless in seeming; but much time can be lost while in them, as was true in the hollow hills of the Fair Folk of Celtic lore.

Author Reply: When Frodo & Sam lost a month without noticing, I realized one could easily lose much, much more!

Very Good! Well grounded in the few bits of information that Tolkien gave.

Author Reply: Thanks, BKB! Glad you liked it!

What a marvelous idea—fairy tales from Faerie! I loved this tale, which does indeed sound like a story the Rohirim would tell. I look forward to others. Thank you.

Blessings,

Alassiel

Author Reply: Hi, Alassiel
I'm glad you liked it. There will be others, though, as mentioned previously, they are /all over the map/. Something for everyone! :)
Thanks,

This was an excellent tale and I am looking forward to more. It reminded me of the Scottish ballads Tam Lin and, particularly, Thomas the Rhymer. I am not hot on Irish myth but I am convinced that despite his protestations the Professor was influenced by Celtic as well as "Northern European" tales. Keep up the good work! Pryderi.

Author Reply: Hi, Pryderi (from the Mabinogion?)
Thanks! Yes, I figure he absorbed Celtic-flavored fairy tales by osmosis during his childhood. Well, so did I!

it is neat how you were able to entwine a number of familiar groups & characters into a whole new story....would like to see more.^__^

I'm glad you want more, though as I mentioned to Dreamflower, they won't be like this one!

I enjoyed this very much! Somewhat reminiscent (to me anyway) of the legend of Oisin and Tir-na-nog in Irish legendry. Very well done!

Author Reply: Hi, SurgicalSteel
Thanks for commenting! Yes, I kept the legends of the Fair Folk of various cultures in mind while writing this one.

Very well done indeed! And such a cautionary tale as this would easily account for the superstitious dread that the Rohirrim seemed to feel toward Lothlorien. I look forward to seeing more of these tales--maybe the Tookish fairy wife? or Queen Beruthiel and her cats? or maybe the tale of Golfimbul from the orcs' POV, LOL! So many lovely possiblities!

I'm glad you liked it! I do have more, though they are all different from "The Sorceress" in mood, plot, character and setting. Not one of the ones you've mentioned, though ... so far.
