Darkness Inescapable  by Peredhel 4 Review(s)

Hello Peredhel,

This story moved me deeply—for several reasons. Miriel's story seems to me to be one of the most tragic of mortal tales. She is the last queen of a fallen nation, who is wedded against her will to perhaps the haughtiest and most deluded of Men. I think that you are right in your portrayal of her death; it is not a despairing one, but one of willing surrender. I love the Quenya, by the way, as I am a delighted student of that tongue. Finally, the brief but loving scene between Faramir and Eowyn is beautiful. Did you intend to post a second chapter? I do hope so.

Blessings,

Alassiel

Author Reply: Thank you. Yes, I agree. It seems -- so unfair, really. She was faithful, she did nothing to deserve what happened to her -- so I tried to see it as almost a reward for her, a deliverance, rather than punishment for a sin she did not commit. Oh, I am glad you like Quenya -- I too am a delighted amateur student. I am never sure which I like better, but usually go with Quenya. Oh, I don't know. Maybe I shall -- this just flew into my mind and I wrote it and posted it. If another idea comes winging in, I'll add it!

A very touching and thought provoking story.I like the implied explanation for Faramir's dreams.

Author Reply: Thank you.

Poor Miriel. A sacrifice. I love the devotion of Earendur and his promise to her - and, come to that, the generosity of spirit that enabled her to set him free in time to board one of the seven ships and (presumably) become Faramir's ancestor.

Miriel seems a singularly appropriate name for a daughter of his.

Author Reply: I'm glad you liked it. I always liked the idea of a connection there, and of course, an explanation of why poor Míriel is simply abandoned. I always thought Míriel would fit for a daughter -- not an exact copy of his name, but still closely related, like Boromir and Elboron. Thank you!

An exquisite vignette, worth the read for the use of Elvish language alone. But there's also a wonderful insight into the last days of Tar-Miriel, and two connections between her and Faramir that are absolutely inspired. I assume that young Earendur is the ancestor of the House of Hurin, how fitting that he promised Miriel that he and his heirs would fight beyond hope.

A wonderful story to mark your debut at SoA.

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm glad the Elvish wasn't too overbearing -- I love it. Yes, Eärendur is THE ancestor. "Still we fight on" seems to be Boromir's mantra in Fellowship, and it seems fairly characteristic of the whole family. Thanks for encouraging me to migrate over!
