They seek to minimize the fear now. And I pray they find the ruffians now, and quickly. Author Reply: It will be some time before the ruffians are found. The Green Hills encompass a vast amount of territory. Having seen them in person, I have a new understanding of travel in that area.

Sneaky title - I know which Took I wanted to waken abruptly, and it was neither Diamond nor Farry. Nor Nell, come to that. The sooner the muster spreads out and starts to catch up with the captors, the better Farry's chances of surviving to marry Goldilocks. Fingers crossed Farry manages to use some of those skills he's learned from his Da - and his Uncle Ferdi - and his own shrewd common sense. And how can you torture poor Nell so? ... Diamond's not going to be pleased with Pippin ... but I think she'll understand his motives are good. Author Reply: Did I not reply to this review? I was sure I had. Clever Farry, in his position most of his cleverness will have to be those of omission rather than commission. Poor Nell. In some ways she irritates me, she's such a wimp sometimes. I can understand what made her that way, after being such a free spirit, earlier. Beaten down by her father's oppressing ways, obligated to marry against her will, learning to love in the sunshine of her loving husband's regard, learning to appreciate the freedom of living outside of the Tookland, only to lose it all. She needs Ferdi, his love and his daftness, as much as he needs her. Maybe even moreso.

Oh this is winding itself into ever more complicated and anquished circles. Poor Diamond indeed. It will be truly awful when she does find out. Author Reply: Well. It might well be truly awful--for Pippin. Good thing Diamond has a good head on her shoulders, and doesn't run to hysterics. Now if we can just move all the pieces about on the map and not have them collide until the proper time... Thanks!

I wonder, when it's all over and done, how Diamond and Nell and the other "womenfolk" will feel about having been kept in the dark about Farry. Yet I can so see why Pippin has done so. Not after the mines, eh? Well, then what I have been suspecting will probably happen...hmmm...(I won't speculate further--don't want to be putting out spoilers--or be embarrassed if I guessed wrong...) At least Ferdi is getting plenty of "rest". Author Reply: "Rest"! *snork* And he didn't even have to drink Elf-draught to get it! I look forward to hearing if your speculations pay off. As I just got home from a meeting that ran late, and am brainless, it being late, and having seven chickens yet to cut up for the freezer, I may only post what editor-friend has sent me of the next chapter of this, after her tinkering, and put off the beta until tomorrow. Sorry about that. But you don't want a beta of little brain, do you?

They've taken a child . . . How long will it be before they notice that Faramir still isn't home? Still an enthralling tale, Lin! Author Reply: It could be a little while. It was "common knowledge" around the Great Smials that Ferdi was waylaid on his way to pick up Farry, and so Farry is still "safe" in Whitwell and will stay there until the emergency is over. So they might not know, outside of a few high-placed hobbits, just *who* the child is, that the ruffians have taken. That the ruffians have taken *any* child at all is intolerable, in the hobbits' eyes, and rank does not matter. They're going to turn out in force and do all in their power to save the innocent. Another good one! The politics between the ruffians. Farry's growing awareness. And Diamond must indeed be sleepy, not to realize that with Ferdi down, she might know who that child must be! It is nice to see them depicted as a happy couple who support each other. your Diamond seems to be a very good Thain's wife. So, I am very sure that it will not take long for her to realize who they are out looking for! Author Reply: Diamond is not necessarily so much sleepy as she is trusting. Her husband told her that Farry was safe at Whittacres. With her history of having miscarried Farry's little brother, two years before, Pippin is going to keep her in the dark about this latest crisis for as long as he can, either until he can present Farry to her, safe, (of which, I'm sorry to say, he has little hope) or until he recovers what is left of their son, and brings the body home. He is going to have the dickens to pay, though, when she finds out how she was deceived... and yet, she will also understand his motivation, and thus, forgive him. Eventually.
