I like your Hobbits. There is dignity in them and they come across as adults with adult sorry but Merry still has an innocence in him. When he enters the King's tent but is thinking he wants someone who jump on beds with - beautiful. All the moments were just this side of possible, really highlights the effect of luck in all endeavour. Though the only exception, I think, was the first one with the Ring, probably since I don't remember the first book too well. The rest could have happened and probably would have happened if only something was slightly different. I can imagine the immense ramifications of all - like Sam not being with Frodo etc. But the last two really hammered it in as they carried the story forward more than the earlier ones I felt, showing what could have happened and the impact on the characters. Does that make any sense?

Wow! That was brilliant! Your characterization of Merry is exactly like I see him. And I think all of these "5 Things" would have been possible. The last chapter, however, is the worst thing that could happen, and it is really heartbreaking! “I will not return to the Shire,” he told Gandalf soon after, and then, when Gandalf was silent, “What would I tell his parents?” There are lots of "Cormallen Stories" on this site, in which Merry does all he can to give his friends the strenght to endure and to heal. In this story he never had the chance to do so, and I can understand how he feels. I'm really glad that this never happened.

Oh, I so glad these are NOT things that happened to Merry! Aren't we grateful for Providence? An excellent job! *hugs Merry* *hugs, brownies, and blessings for you!*

Oh, these 5 moments broke my heart! It was like peering through a darkened window, and although I didn't like what I saw inside, I couldn't tear my eyes away. You wrote these beautifully, each one leaves me with vivid (nightmare) images, but of course I liked the last the best: He kept a garden for Sam and wrote a book for Frodo, but he could do nothing for Pippin except look at the Mountains of Shadow and curse. And this too: Pippin had his head resting on Frodo’s shoulder and Frodo had an arm around Pippin’s waist. Holding him up, Merry thought. That should be me. It was then that Merry realized that they were barely standing—barely alive, even. Merry recoiled, stricken. Poor Merry! (And poor other hobbits!)

Pretty horrible things to contemplate. Very horrible.
