| This is where I started reading this tale, and now I've returned to it. It kept me from doing anything else - like homework, ironing, cooking, controlling school work - but reading, reading, reading. Thank you so much. I have this image of you sitting down, reading a chapter ... getting into the story ... oh no! ....ahh! Poor Frodo! Poor Merry! Oh, poor Pippin ... and by your last review, you are sweating, bug-eyed and gripping your computer screen with white-knuckled hands. (Which is my normal state when reading angsty fanfiction). | OH Budgielover! You really are killing me here! I'm so glad to see Frodo again. His parts are my favorites. And poor Sam! Oh I wish I could just hug him and tell him everything will be alright because I'm assuming *pointed stare at you* that everything will be alright. Ahem. And don't worry about Real Life getting in the way. I've left my dear readers on a mean cliff as well. My confounded computer went dead on me. I could have chucked it out of a very, very, very high widnow. I've lost all fanfictoin and my novel. But I suppose the Lord has a plan for everything, so...maybe...I don't know. It's alright now. I guess. I just read your bio...I love roses too! I want to plant some climbing roses on this brick gateway that is in my yard. :) In the spring, of course. It will be experimental, and I desperately wish Sam were here to help me! He's such a good gardener, adn everything I plant...well...dies. I can't imagine losing a whole novel, and your fanfiction. I guess you can rebuild much of that from the archives (I bought a 100GB external hard drive because I couldn't imagine losing my collection of fanfiction - I treasure it more than any book on my bookshelves) but it must have been wrenching. | Ok, I hope you don't think this is too weird or anything, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Elrond shook his head. “Compression wraps are unwise for broken ribs unless absolutely necessary for pain. Such wraps can impede proper circulation and keep one from taking deep breaths, which might increase of risk of lung infections. There is a type of wrap I will apply when we arrive at the inn, but not on a cold, dirty street. Master Frodo is having enough difficulty breathing; we must not add to it.” Finally, someone who writes it properly!!!!! I have read lots of fanfic in which characters are subjected to broken ribs and are then bandaged up. In the modern day era, this is a huge No-No for the reasons you wrote above. Bandaging the ribs compresses the muscles and doesn't allow for the lungs to expand properly, thus leading to collapse of the alveolar (air sacs) and eventually pneumonia. I know this sounds totally silly and pathetic, but you have made my day, Budgie by writing this one detail true to life when so many others don't. And you had Elrond explain it so very well to Sam too! I am highly interested to see how you go about relieving Frodo's hemo-pneumothorax, most especially using Middle-earth "technology" and the skills of one Elven healer. If you need any help/tips on the treatment or healing of Frodo's lung, feel free to drop me an email. I see this stuff all the time at the hospital where I work. One little nitpick though: although the reasoning for having Frodo cough is quite sound, it is better advice given to him after his damaged lung is treated, coupled along with deep breathing exercises to help re-expand the lung. With an internal injury such as you've given poor Frodo, it's extremely difficult to breathe and almost impossible to cough due to all of the air pressure being exerted onto the one good lung. Every time Frodo breathes in, some of that air is being driven through the puncture in his bad lung and out into his chest cavity, where it (and the blood) eventually compresses the good lung until it too is no longer usable. Every time he beathes in, he is in fact squashing his good lung too with this particular type of injury until that pressure is released. I hope they get that inn soon, before it's too late! Boy, you're putting all the hobbits through their paces (grins evilly) I'm loving every bit of this tale, Budgie, and I can't wait for the next chapter. :D ~Elemmírë~ Author Reply: Elemmírë, this is my formal thanks for your review, and for your incredibly generous offer in providing me medically correct information for Chapter 15. | *Gasp* What a chapter you have been a busy lil Budgie-kins haven’t you? And unfortunately it took me all they way till today to write you a review for this chapter. I apologize. I DID in fact read the update on the 19th...actually my dad printed it up for me b4 I went to school...*thank you Daddy* Anyhoodles.... Poor Frodo...and Merry...and EVERYONE! So much angst!!! I do hope Merry escapes from the evil clutches of that evil man.... --- Katie: How dare you threaten my poor lil Merry-kins you big meanie! | Oh my goodness gracious! You just love putting our hobbits on mortal danger, don't you? It seems the only who stands a chance of getting through this with only minimal harm is Sam! I love that Frodo requested for Sam to remain with him. Very fitting, and reminescent of Cirith Ungol. Merry might have stood a chance if he hadn't allowed himself to be distracted. Or he could have pretended to be distracted, allowing the man to make his move only to thwart him. I hope those soldiers don't take too long finding Merry. It might already be too late for Pippin, unless his Tookish luck kicks in. *on pins and needles* Author Reply: Yes. GamgeeFest, you have pegged me. But I get them out again, don't I? | Wow! I think this is your personal record. Three different storylines, and *each one* ending with a cliffhanger. Again, Wow!!! Can it get worse? Pippin is lost somewhere and in the hands of Orcs, Frodo is fighting for his life and Merry had to capitulate, after a real good fight, I must say. Only Sam seems to be not in danger. But can I be sure of that? I don't think so ;-) At least Aragorn and company will search for Merry and Pippin everywhere they can think of. But what really makes me uneasy are Gandalf's words full of anger and grief! If Gandalf loses hope, all is lost! Please update soon! Author Reply: Oh, Andrea, you should know never to ask,'can it get worse?' I take that as a challenge. *grins* I think I did actually have four cliffhangers in one chapter, in either "Some Nameless Place" or in "Recovery in Rivendell;" I can't remember this. But three a chapter is a good effort. Now the HARD part begins ... tying up all those storylines into one again, like weaving the strands of a rope. | |
