| Ah - that is what started the tale I found this morning! (And you wrote it for Daynawayna... which made me giggle, for she nudged a story out of me some time ago, and it has become one of my favorite ones). Love this to pieces - and I guess the faerie is the legendary ancestress of Pippin? Marvelously done. Cúthalion Author Reply: Hi again, Cuthalion! Perhaps we need to stick a warning label on Daynawayna: "This person is known to nudge stories out of unsuspecting LOTR fanfic writers." She seems to have a good sense of what to give nudges about, though! Yes, the faerie is Cullassisul, (I do have a tendancy to change the spelling at times to Culassisul) the faerie who long ago married a Took. She emerged in my "While We Dwelt in Fear" and she has since shown up in a couple of other stories. I've the feeling that someday, her story will come begging to be told. | I found this story a couple of weeks ago and, being a sentimental sort, had a good cry over it, and went on. But it has sort of stuck with me so today I decided to read it again. I thought that I wouldn't be so sappy over it the second time. True I'm not sobbing out loud this time, but I do have tears in my eyes, and that funny tight feeling in my chest (or should I say in my heart?). The haunting quality of the encounters, the bothers' relationship with each other, the enduring love between Merry and Pippin (strong enough to last beyond death), all are so clearly and realistically described that I feel it like it's happening to me. Balance that out with the oh-so-perfectly written humor, especially the little digs that I can just hear Merry and Pippin saying, and you've given us a wonderful story, one of the best I've read in fandom. And then, the image of the long-past cave-in at the end of the story adds that perfect "shiver up the spine" feeling to make this a truly haunting story, one I will treasure. I'm so glad you like my Jebbin and Other stories. Because a fair number of folks mentioned they would like to know what happens next, I've started on a follow-up. | A very Tookish Took, is she? With green eyes, perchance? And a connection to a world she never speaks of? I do hope so. Gorgeous ending - just a little spooky, like everything to do with Culassisul. I think Jebbin and Other have taken on rather a job - and one that won't earn them much honour among their peoples. But the truth should be told. I wonder if they will meet again. Some time. In this world or another ... Author Reply: Yes, she is :-) Green eyes? Yes, those too. Yes, she's different and knows it. | And this time the faerie saw to it that the truth is known and told. So, even Dwarves seem to be missing in this time, eh? And all too soon Hobbits too will fade into the hidden places. And three Hobbits long ago at the end acknowledged their griefs and left the Shire to finish their lives elsewhere, one able to follow Frodo, the other two doing the best they could in the world they inhabited. | Tooks: no Brandybuck should go through life without one. How very true! And so it is no wonder that after some hundred years we come to know a Tookish Brandybuck ;-) (Must have something to do with Adelard and Mallow, I suppose?) Oh, I really like Jebbin and Other and their meeting with the ghosts of Meriadoc and Peregrin. And Athelas Took, of course. Now, that name is post-quest, I believe. She has to be a very special lady, for she is able to hear the voice of Culassisul, the faerie. “Tell them that hobbits are all we need to be, without magic of the kind in those false stories.” Pippin turned to look at the brothers and Athelas who had joined them on the floor. “Tell them we are strong, brave, loyal, loving, merciful and just.” “And that is all the magic anyone needs.” Merry added That's it, exactly! Even if there was some real magic needed to reveal the truth. P.S.: Did those hobbits really believe that Sam wrote the Red Book? He wrote the last part of it, that's true. But most of it was written by Bilbo and Frodo! Author Reply: Good catch, Andrea! I'll have to work with that, but it really was a slip on my part. I was thinking in terms of the Red Book by then being associated with the Gamgee/Gardeners and the Fairbairns of the Towers who had it in their possession. Yes, Athelas is a "faerie blood" Took. Culassisul's line will last as long as there are Tooks :-) I'm so glad you enjoyed Jebbin and Other, thank you! | |

| :O :O ::tries...::: :O I.. I'm just.... WOW. ::squeals:: THATWASSOCOOL!! :D :D Wow, THANK YOU Pearl! I just loved it! And I'm so glad that your muse decided to show you the way! I'm so honored... thank you. :) It was just what I'd hoped it would be.. and I LOVE Athelas! OMG! You are so smart, throwing another "quest" name into the mix! Awesome! I like how the memory stuck with him... Jeb really is a smart hobbit. He knew, way deep down, that their truth was not truth and the vile lies were infact, truth, which would certainly bug him... whoops.. sorry! Didn't mean to "go tookish" on you! LOL. But I really like how you made that believable and kept the boys true characters into adulthood. And of course I always love seeing Mer and Pip again! :) And I have to admit, the "cave-in" threw me for a moment... but then I got it. GOD BLESS THE MAGIC. ;) THAT was just... wow. So cool. I'm honored, tickled, amazed.... thank you! :D Author Reply: You are most definitely welcome, Daynawayna - thank you!! Actually, you, like Merry and Pippin in Fangorn, are the small stone starting an avalanche. People at Marigold's Challenge all said they want to know what happens next - what happens when Jebbin writes his book and starts telling the true story. That story is now in process, though I don't expect to post any of it too soon as I've a lot of other stuff to do and another challenge story to write. It will be more than one chapter I'm thinking.
