Okay, insubordination, yes; but the signs of a canny captain there. Listen well, Denethor. Author Reply: Ah, but Denethor's order is not completely unwarranted. Thorongil displays a good deal of arrogance in acting openly against Denethor, convinced that he is right and that he can sneak across the river and spy out the enemy's camps. So Denethor has every right to dress down his Captain. But it would be exteremly stupid to ignore the news Thorongil discovered. Thanks for all the lovely reviews!

I love the image of dripping Aragorn, calmly explaining to Denethor why he chose to disregard orders. I kind of sympathize with poor Denethor here, though! Author Reply: I was not quite sure if the whole setting is believable. Aragorn would need very good reasons to defy an order. But I think there must have been situations where his opinion and Denethor's opinion where just too far apart. And even Aragorn's patience has its limits, especially if he is convinced that he is right and Denethor is not. But he would not ask someone else to act against Denethor in such a way, so he had to go himself ;-)
