Ah, but it has been a while since I read this last, I see. Still moving, and so appropriately Hobbity!

I'll be down Monday the sixth, by the way. Hoping to see you then!

Author Reply: Looking forward to seeing you when you arrive. With the cool rains arriving, hot chocolate seems just the thing.

*sigh* How I love hobbits and hobbity things.

Thanks!

Yes--war is past, and now we live again as Hobbits of the Shire--in peace.

Lovely, Lindelea.

Author Reply: Thank you.

Looking forward to seeing you when you can manage.

The war whose end we remember on November 11th had been Tolkien and C.S.Lewis's war, it was to be "the war to end all wars". Sadly, all it did was to usher in the end of the European age of medieval-feudal relative "innocence". The world became much less 'simpler" than it had once seemed to be. It is so lovely to read at the end of the trilogy about the Hobbit's age of peace, streching into the distant future. We value more the peace which is so rare in "real life". Nicely done!

Author Reply: Yes, I was thinking of "the war to end all wars" as I wrote this.

Thanks!

But this is the most important part:
Swords hang over the hearth,
Bows are for hunting,
Axes rest by the woodpile, and
Pitchforks hang up in the barn.

Best commemoration any war can have. Peace - and the appreciation of it.

Author Reply: So true. Thanks.

I read from the first "The Battle of Bywater" through to this of the same name - poignant, wonderfully touching and poignant.

Author Reply: Thank you! And I just now realised, reading your review, that there are two chapters with the same title.

The peace that this speaks of is what I wish for everyone. Very well said!

A perfectly wonderful drabble Lindelea. Is the layout on the page deliberate because the second half definitely adds to the overall effect.

Author Reply: Yes, the break between the two halves is deliberate. Thanks for noticing!

Wow! That was a great one, Lindelea!

A drabble is very difficult to write, it forces you to focus on that what really counts: After the Battle of Bywater tools are tools again and swords are mathoms.
The hobbits can live peaceful once more, but they had to pay a high prize for it!

Thank you :)

Author Reply: Yes, well said, a drabble is an exercise in focus. And yes, that is just what I was aiming at. Tools are tools and swords are mathoms. I was thinking of that old verse about swords being beaten into plowshares, while writing this.
