| How did I miss this? That last half is used as The Act of Remembrance up here by The Royal Canadian Legion and as the niece of WWII Vets, I know it by memory. This was lovely and a beautiful tribute to those who did not make it home. Thank you Jay. Author Reply: I know the last verse very well - I think it's used across the world. I didn't know, until a couple of years ago, that there was more - and the previous verse I quoted seemed so apt for Movie!Helm's Deep. The drabble turned out more hopeful and upbeat than I intended. It's dedicated to all those who served and died, but also those who served and returned. Thanks for the review. | |

| Wow! Sad! As much as I love any chance to see elves, I never liked the elves at Helms Deep, but this makes me look at it in another light. Great drabble for the occassion, Jay! Author Reply: I know it wasn't canon, and they shouldn't have been there - but I loved the scene. The hope and awe in the faces of the men was wonderful. Glad you liked this! | |

| Lovely, but very heart-tugging. In every war there are so many for whom there is no hope and no dawn. And, as it is said, those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. Of course, there were a lot of lovers of the books who did not like so many changes in the films. But that one WAS a particularly lovely scene. And, Ms.Boyens reminded us in her DVD comments that the elves did fight the war in their own realms as well, so that became a short-hand reminder of that. And, for me, one of the most poignant anti-war statements of all of the movies is that final pan across the elves who have died in that battle... there they lay in their feather-patterned armour, like so many achingly beautiful, fallen birds. As Tolkien said in "The Hobbit" at the end of The Battle of Five Armies, many a merry elf fell who should have yet sung many years in the green wood... Lest we forget! Beautifully done! Author Reply: I love the scene of the elves arriving at Helm's Deep, even though I know they shouldn't have been there. There are times, even in the darkest hours, when help arrives unlooked for, and despair is turned to hope - like Dunkirk. And even in those times, there are very many who still do not make it. | It's a glorious moment. And hope's probably the best thing you can have at times like these. Author Reply: I wrote this a couple of days ago, but it was interesting to see the scene again last night - from the men's expressions, I think it did give them hope again. And, of course, Hope is quite handy to have around as well! | |

| I remember the faces of the men (in the movie, of course) when the elves came marching up that causeway...ranging from relief to awe to outright glee, and how the atmosphere seemed to lighten as they came. You had me sniffling at the end of that first verse of the poem and positively blubbering by the time the elves showed up, bringing hope with them (and of course, the end of the poem was the end of me)! So much said with so few words, yet so powerful, especially considering today's date...(my late husband served in the Navy (Viet Nam), making today especially meaningful to me). Thank you for sharing such a wonderful short story, Jay! Linda Author Reply: I loved that scene, even though I *knew* it shouldn't happen like that! The poem I quoted just seemed so right for that part. The rest of the poem always makes me shiver when I hear it on Remembrance Day.
