Light from the West  by Armariel 2 Review(s)

Goodness - Raven's a bit young to go accepting proposals, isn't she? And her brother sounds a real chancer! It's just as well that Frodo doesn't mind taking Raven under his wing.

But the magic of the sea people is most interesting - and I suppose it doesn't seem at all special to them. Anemone is becoming very caring - Raven seems to bring out the mother in her. Poor kid. Her scars are more than on the outside.

Author Reply: I conceived of Raven as being the equivalent of a mortal girl of about 13 or 14 years old, which is old enough to marry in some societies, of course, but for an elf-girl it is a trifle youngish, surely. Still, she can't help but be attracted to the family stability she perceives in Frodo, Anemone, and Northlight, and perhaps there's something in her that wants to be a part of it, and I don't doubt she finds Northlight attractive in himself. Frodo surely identifies strongly with Raven himself, both in being an orphan and having been in Mordor, thus seeing fit to share his light with her. Guilin loves her in his way, certainly, but as a well-known author remarked, love is never any better than the lover.

I think I've conceived the sea-folk as a sort of lower order of Maiar, faery-like and sometimes very intelligent, yet with the simplicity of animals in their emotions and sexuality, but becoming more and more human as they interact with land-folk, to whom they are strongly attracted in folklore. And magic may be important to them but Anemone is discovering that love may be even better. As well as more dangerous.

Oh, to have the blessing of Earendil on all of them! So fitting! And still ANOTHER marriage in the making, and a long story to learn of what happened to Raven.

And the hymn is beautiful.

Author Reply: So glad you like it, Dearie--I keep meaning to put it to music, and getting sidetracked...well, maybe soon! Maybe even this weekend, since it looks like I may get snowed in.......

Yeah, yeah, we Southerners are wussies, letting a little snow keep us indoors:D
